Subashitam

Sanskrit language is the most ancient languages known to the world. The word “Sanskrit " is derived as " सम्यक् कृतम् इति” which literally means refined.

Subhashitas are collection of wise sayings from the ocean of wisdom in Sanskrit literature.Su in sanskrit means good and Bhasitam means spoken, together means well spoken or saying. Subhashitas are known for their moral advice.There are numerous subhashitas. Amongst those Shubashitas, Bhartrihari’s Shataka Trayam is very famous. The great poet has rendered three masterpieces of hundred verses each, namely

Niti Shatakam { 100 verses on Ethics and policy}

Shrungara Bharakam{ 100 verse on Love and Desire}

Vairagya Shahalam { 100 verse on Renunciation}

I would like to mention a Subhashitam which I like the most

अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्।

उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्।।

The meaning of this Shubhashita:-

Consideration like "He is mine , he is another " - occurs only to the thoughts of narrow minded people. For the noble minded, the whole world is their own family.

This is really nice to know. Sanskrit is a language that I have wanted to learn but the accessibility to learn it in Malaysia is really hard. Glad to know that this ancient language is still used.
