Like most things in America, the camping and RV world is overflowing with opportunities — from Harvest Hosts and HipCamp to Boondockers and plenty more. I’ve used many of them myself, and they’ve led me to some truly unforgettable spots. But this post isn’t an endorsement — it’s about the adventures (and misadventures) that come with finding those hidden gems along the way.
Here’s a little nugget of wisdom I learned the hard way: always check your route before heading off the beaten path. Open Google Maps, tap on “Layers,” and switch to “Terrain.” That simple step can save you from a world of trouble.
How do I know? Because one sunny afternoon, while chasing the promise of an amazing winery stay, I found myself literally stuck in the mud on a backcountry road. What started as a relaxing detour for a glass of cabernet turned into a muddy mess of wheels spinning, shoes sinking, and a whole lot of laughter (after the fact, of course).
So, fellow travelers — learn from my muddy mistake: plan smart, drive prepared, and keep your sense of humor handy. The road to adventure isn’t always smooth, but it sure makes for a good story.
NB: I did make it to the Vineyard in time to see an amazing sunset!
