Streetview Video vs Photos?

I’m looking at getting into Street view instead of just standard photos. Taking 360* Photos with a camera phone takes WAY to long! I ordered a Samsung Gear 360 as it should be much faster. I want to be able to create routes in the bay with my boat, Railroad beds via ATV/Snowmobile and just general other areas I hike.

In a perfect world I would have a device I can mount on my helmet/head/roof of car… that can just take the photos and send them right to my Note 9 for upload. It seems like the Gear 360 will do this but I am reading it needs about 8 seconds per picture every 9’ or so, this would be a VERY slow walk. Does Video mode do this, just much faster? What are the advantages/disadvantages of both? I would like to use a cheaper device, Ideally <200$ but I can spend more, I do not want a $5000 piece of equipment or even a $1500 Piece of equipment as I want to do this just as a hobby and so others can benefit from the areas I go and places I visit.

Thoughts?

Hi @OceanStateTuning

Of course you can. This is the article you are looking for: Capture and publish in Video mode with the Street View app

In there you will find also the devices that are compatible with the Street View App in video mode. I personally use a Ricoh Theta V, and it works fine.

Thank you, I had already read that and see the cameras listed as video mode. Is Video mode needed? I read online most people seem to do Time lapse photos at .5 second intervals, I assume this can be set on a cheaper camera, such as the gear 360 though the app?

Ideally the camera would do it all with the phone but I do have a computer with roughly 60TB of storage and 3 1080TI graphics cards that I only use to surf the web (Former miner) so I do have tons of processing power if needed.

Hi @OceanStateTuning thank you for reaching out. If you want to use your 360 camera with Google Street View app, you do not really need a computer or with high processing power. This process only takes place between the camera and your smartphone through the app. Video mode is only used for trails or roads not indoors, their photos do not count as part of your Google map contribution but they are part of Google Street View photos, they are counted there.

You can use interval mode to capture multiple 360 photos which can form a blue line when connected to appear just like the one captured in video mode. Connecting photos can be done manually or automatically depending on your settings from the app itself. Buying a smaller and cheaper camera will only cost you quality, cheaper cameras they are normally not that good but you can find the one to suit your needs, just like the type of camera you mentioned which is an Insta 360 its photo quality is good, referring to what I have seen before.

@Raphael-Mahumane so since I mostly want to do trails and waterways, I need to use video and not interval mode? If so is each picture going to take 8 seconds? I would like to go above walking speed.

@OceanStateTuning that is the time difference between each photo, you need to consider your speed, if you will be using a car or any vehicle, make sure to use the correct speed suggested, as they are not the same when walking on foot. You should not be too slow or too fast. Check on the documents or pages shared here.
