Street View Across Nigerian Cities

Street View has become a veritable tool for many Google Map users worldwide. Personally, it is my go-to place if I am visiting a new location. I take time to look at the building, surrounding building and landmarks before heading out. This helps me 100% all the time to successfully arrive at my destination.

In the last few years, SV was exclusively available in two major cities of Lagos and Abuja then it was expanded to six more and right now, most cities in southern Nigeria can be navigated using the visual tool on Google Maps.

Recently, I tried to explore some roads in Owerri and the SV app was quite useful in addition to the voice navigation. I also introduced the app to a few friends and drivers who may not be sure how to navigate to their destination without asking questions.

One thing I also observed that some POIs where wrongly located on the roads or roundabout which of course could be misleading. I understand that the GPS or slow Internet could cause such meanwhile as Local Guides what are we here for? Edit right!? Yea.

So, I want to thank the Google Maps and Street View teams for expanding and updating these 3D images across Nigeria.

If you are outside Lagos, Abuja and Rivers, let us know if Street View is available in your city.

I actually enjoy using the street view in Lagos. Not during navigation, but pre-visit to a place.

During my last Visit to Benin City i noticed with joy that the street view is now active there. I didn’t take time to notice any distortions because it was a short stay.

While we applaud the google map team and the street view team, there’s need to be done around west-Africa. I traveled to Bene republic recently and to be honest, even in the county’s capital, the map is poor and basically no street view. @SholaIB what is the street view like in Ghana?

@preciousimo Yes, visuals like streetview and and voice navigation are helpful for people with different abilities.

@MrFreez Thank you for sharing your experience, Benin City looks fully 360. For Benin Republic, I guess we have less Local Guides out there and less contributors to help improve the map but it is a gradual process and I think StreetView would be worldwide.

Thank you @EmekaUlor this Is such a timely response because just today I used street view in Sabon gari area of Kano state (northern Nigeria) to check a warehouse I was renting for my company. I felt gratifying to be able to describe the place to even the agent looking for the warehouse. It was fascinating to say the least.

That’s correct! @EmekaUlor Street view has widely expanded across Nigeria. It has covered so many part of the North including my Hometown, Kaduna.

It has also covered Kano, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Niger, and some parts of Sokoto.
