Stone Mountain Park is a huge park located near Atlanta Georgia. I had the opportunity to visit the park couple of times. Once I stayed within the park. This is a destination for family fun in Atlanta. Park it self is huge around 3200 acres, consists of several family friendly activities.
There are couple of on-site lodging options and also camp grounds in the park. There are several festivals and events are held within this park.
As the name suggests, there is a huge Stone Mountain in the park. As stated in Wikipedia here are some statistics about this stone mountain:
“Stone Mountain is more than 5 miles (8 km) in circumference at its base. The summit of the mountain can be reached by a walk-up trail on the west side of the mountain or by the Skyride Aerial Tram. At its summit, the elevation is 1,686 feet (514 m) above sea level and 825 feet (251 m) above the surrounding area. Stone Mountain is well known for not only its geology, but also the enormous rock relief on its north face, the largest bas-relief artwork in the world. The carving depicts three Confederate leaders, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson—making it the subject of widespread controversy”
Here are some more statistics from Wikipedia about the carving on the mountain:
“The entire carved surface measures 1.57 acres (6,400 m2). The carving of the three men is 400 feet (120 m) above the ground, measures 76 by 158 feet (23 by 48 m), and is recessed 42 feet (13 m) into the mountain. The deepest point of the carving is at Lee’s right elbow, which is 12 feet (3.7 m) into the mountain’s surface.”
Very well described post about the Stone Mountains. Is there any entry fee or is it free? Also, amazing captures of the places around. The pictures are breath-taking I wish you all the best for the challenge
@jayasimha78 I haven’t been to Stone Mountain since I was a child. I always found it just amazing to have such HUGE carvings on the side of a mountain! I was hoping we’d get an article about Stone Mountain. Fond memories from childhood. Thank you!!!
@MayuriKubal You’ll have to pay to get into the park by car. The daily parking rate is $20 per vehicle, and the annual rate is $40. Other than that there is a fee to go up the mountain using cable car, costs $10 per person. Thank you!
