Stob pyramids - a legend for the stone wedding

Hello Local Guides, I want to share with you a wonderful place in Bulgaria near the village of Stob which is called - Stobski Pyramids.

The Stob pyramids are rock formations of which reach up to 12 meters. They were formed as a result of rain water and the melting of snow for 1-2 million years. They were declared a natural landmark in 1964 and are said to be worthy rivals of the Melnik Pyramids.

There are legends about how the pyramids were formed and one of them reads:
“At one time in the village of Stob there were a young man and a girl who were very in love and wanted to marry in the area above the village (Stob pyramids). The girl’s mother did not like the young man for her daughter’s husband, and when the lovers announced that they wanted to marry, the mother went to the place where the priramids are now and cursed her daughter. When the wedding started the bride kissed the young man and then all the wedding guests were petrified. And so the famous Stob pyramids were formed.”

The Stob pyramids are located in several places and all of them are in the abyss. Around the abyss, there are safety fences.

The walk from the parking lot to the Stob pyramids along this path is about half an hour’s walk.

The best time to visit the pyramids is just before sunset or moonlight. The colors of the pyramids are light yellow to dark brown and red and are extremely intense and bright.

They are a delight to all visitors… legends and reality - these are the Stob pyramids.

Best regards!

Hi @mockata2 ,

Another great post from you! I love the way you captured the sun reflecting the pyramids, as if they are made from gold. It must have been a special experience sitting there enjoying this splendid view, and with the mountains from the distance.

Also, the legend you mentioned is quite fascinating. It adds extra charm to the place. :slightly_smiling_face:

Do you need to hike in order to get to the pyramids from the village? How long does it take by foot?

Did you also get the chance to explore the village of Stob?

I will add this place to my travel list @mockata2 . Thank you.

I traveled twice in Bulgaria with my family. We visited Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, Burgas, and also many natural sites. Both trips were amazing.

Hello @Ekattotii , and Thank you for appreciating my presentation of the Stob Pyramids.

The experience there is truly unique, especially during the spring-summer season before sunset. Photos cannot show so much about the beauty of nature if you do not see it with your own eyes.

There is not much to see in the village of Stob. The village is mostly known for its pyramids. The only thing I can think of is the Church of St. Procopius, which was founded in 1397.

There is a car park near the church and from there begins a path leading to the Stob pyramids. Climbing on foot takes about 30 minutes to the site. During the transition there are benches and resting places where people can relax from climbing up to the pyramids.

I hope that the next time you visit Bulgaria, you will also visit the pyramids to enjoy the view that I also to enjoyed.

Best regards!

I am glad @Andrey_K that your stay in Bulgaria is pleasant.
Have you visited some of the most beautiful Bulgarian cities such as Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo they have a very ancient history.

Thank you for sharing a photo of the Wonderful Bridges rock phenomenon in the Rhodope Mountains. And here, as with the pyramids, the great cause is the water for the formation of these “stone bridges”

Thank you @Austinelewex !
I am glad that you appreciated my post about the Stob pyramids and I hope that when you visit Bulgaria you will definitely stop by them. All guests of Bulgaria are first acquainted with the main sights and one of them is the Rilski Monastery .
For the Stob pyramids it turns off from the road to Rilski Monastery.
