Steam train depot in XXI century? Yes!

I continue my railway museums tour.

In this post, there’s an early XX century railway station and a steam locomotives depot.

It’s located on Podmoskovnaya station (in-Russian it means “Moscow suburban”, but now it’s Moscow) and it really was a station from where trains went to Vindava (now Ventspils, Latvia).

The house of the station, the depot and the water tower compose the ensemble and look like every railroad building was styled that time. Railroad architecture is a special area in architectural history. The porte-cochere is authentic too but brought from another place.

In the Museum you can see examples of railroad offices, services, and form of different workers. Most of the exhibit items are reconstructed.

Also, you can visit depot, where you can learn about the steam locomotive construction and see how details for it are made, but please don’t disturb workers, they’re not an exhibition, they work.

But the most interesting area is all around. You can observe almost all the cycle of steam locomotive work. The special machine brings coal into a locomotive, there’s a tube that puts water into a tender, the puffs of smoke and locomotive goes its way, here comes another one… If you’re very lucky you would also see how turnaround works (but I didn’t).

P.s. Here is my map where I collect museums about transport. If you know a good place, please let me know, I’ll add it to my list.
