I have come to Kiev the capital city of Ukraine and will be spending few more days in the city.
Before the month of July runs out, I felt I need to write about St Volodymyr’s Cathedral today , as another contribution to the monthly TopicforJuly.
I have heard of St Volodymyr ’ s Cathedral before even thought of coming to Kiev, Ukraine and luckily now that I am in the city, the cathedral is just located 100m meters away from my hotel.
So , I wasted no time visiting the most reverence cathedral in the city.
The magnifence of St Volodymyr’s cathedral is beyond what words can describe.
There is a sense of reverence surrounding the cathedral. Even the pedestrians stop to genuflect in an act of worship to God as they continue walk along the road . Its compound is dotted with believers praying fervently in one or twos.
St Volodymyr’s cathedral remain an active church , even when I got inside a mass was still being celebrated.
A little Delve Into History
According to history , the cathedral was built to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the Baptism of kievan Rus by prince Vladimir 1 of Kiev ( St. Volodymyr’s ) .
To build the cathedral , People from all over the Russian Empire started donating and a total sum of 100, 000 rubles was raised by the year 1859.
It was aslo chronicled that the Kiev Pechersk lavra which can be translated as Monastery of the Caves produced one million bricks and presented them toward the completion of cathedral- I wonder if that height of self sacrifice is still possible today ?
Coming to recently history, the cathedral was among the religious buildings mark for demolition under during Soviet communist regime which has outlawed all form religious gathering .
It was decided to convert the cathedral to a museum seeing how beautiful and how important the cathedral was to the people of kiev.
When I got inside the church , the interior is so beautiful beyond what I can describe. it is adorned with colourfully mosaic stones and frensco paintings.
I will end my post by advising you to come to kiev and not forget to visit this magnificent cathedral.
