St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral
The building is about 60 meters long, 11 wide and 18 high, it has a single vaulted nave and its dome reaches 30 meters high. The style of the architecture is Baroque.
The Cathedral of “San Miguel de Tegucigalpa” is one of the oldest and most important buildings in the city that is preserved to this day in good general condition. The building has a place in Honduran history that is not limited to the sphere of influence of the city of Tegucigalpa but to the entire country, being the most renowned and traditional church since the beginning of the 20th century.
There is a story that tells that this building was built by slaves, and nowadays, due to the constant faults of the Catholic Church, it is always the target of vandal acts in the protests, where its walls are scratched and painted, stones are thrown at it and it protests because there is a mesh on the top so that the pigeons do not settle, some become entangled and die.
It is filled every day in the morning and afternoon with faithful people, in its surroundings people from the LGTBI community gather as a meeting point, homeless people and many alcoholics. Also at night it is a point of sex trade, and in Tegucigalpa it is an exact reference to reach the city center.
It is a very opportune place to know if you visit the city of Tegucigalpa, emblematic and showing a reality in which its construction is a clear example of the power that the Catholic Church has in our country and how it is not interested in vulnerable populations.
