Sri Lankan Food Festival at Baluchi, The Lalit Ashok Bangalore

To me, Sri Lankan cuisine is a must-have if I found while traveling. Sri Lankan food is not for the faint-hearted; the fiery curries, sweet caramelized onion in seeni sambal and sour lime pickle all have dominant, powerful flavors that startle awake senses dulled by the daily city life. Dishes from this island-country are known for their intricacy and many thinks they are quite similar to South Indian food but Sri Lankan cuisine continues to carve out its distinct niche.

Baluchi, The Lalit Ashok Bangalore

We went to Baluchi to have our lunch and found, Sri Lankan Food Festival is going on. Some of the specials on the festive menu are extremely interesting & traditional and can be any food connoiseur’s delight.

Sri Lankan Pol Sambol & Sri Lankan Karawila Sambol

We started off with famous Sri Lankan Sambols, I found the Sri Lankan Karawila Sambol, is smooth yet, perfectly fried bitter gourd with ridiculously crisp outer layer, served with marinated onion, tomatoes, green chilli and spices and the Sri Lankan Pol Sambol rings the perfect starting, and might just be the best thing we’ll have that night.

Sri Lankan Seer Fish Cutlets

Next we share the delectable crispy Sri Lankan Seer Fish Cutlets batter fried beautifully holding the flavour and melt in mouth spicy tuna and potato mash. My advice, be sure to dunk the Seer Fish Cutlets into their spicy house dip.

Sri Lankan Wattakka Curry

For mains we start with the addictive Sri Lankan Wattakka Curry loaded with fresh chunks of pumpkin, coconut milk and local spices. This must try flavourful Sri Lankan Wattakka Curry featuring a generous portions of un-skinned pumpkin in spicy coconut curry and perfectly matched with a bowl of warn rice.

Spicy Sri Lankan Crab Curry

Now make sure you shouldn’t miss this mouth-watering, Spicy Sri Lankan Crab Curry that is seasoned simply with local spices, salt and pepper, and served with flavourful spicy curry. The seasoned crab meat is so seductively caramelised that it will go perfectly with rice, idiyappam or appam. Do not miss the Spicy Sri Lankan Crab Curry flavoured with traditional spices and coconut milk, if you want a real taste of Sinhala food.

Sri Lankan Chicken Badun Curry

Then we tuck into spicy Sri Lankan Chicken Badun Curry prepared with chunks of tender and juicy chicken, coconut milk, tamarind and authentic spices. An infusion of bold and savoury flavours await in the Sri Lankan Chicken Badun Curry, sprinkled with spices and black pepper dust, served with a side of idiyappam.

Sri Lankan Lamb Coconut Curry

Finally we have slow-cooked till extremely soft, their melt-in-your-mouth Sri Lankan Lamb Coconut Curry. I found this is an excellent option that comes with a bowl of steamed rice. Meat-lovers, try this super flavourful Sri Lankan Lamb Coconut Curry topped with toasted grated coconut.

Hi @RajdeepB ,

Everything looks extremely delicious on your post! Congrats on the amazing photos you made. I would love to try the Wattaka Curry, it seems it’s vegetarian, right? What do they celebrate during this Festival? Is it different food from different parts of Sri Lanka? I would love to taste something like that.

Thanks so much for sharing!

@RajdeepB Wow, those plates look delicious. Now I would go with Sri Lankan Seer Fish Cutlets and Spicy Sri Lankan Crab Curry. Which one do you like most besides the starter.
