A quick trip can give you immense satisfaction with very little planning. I was looking for something to do with family in mid-November, when the travel season is pretty slow. In November, I was thinking of a daytrip to Yosemite. In general, you need to reserve spaces a year ahead of time, but I saw campsites open for the Monday before Thanksgiving, so I booked one. I grabbed camping gear, warm sleeping bags and extra blankets, and the leftovers out of the fridge, and packed them into the truck with our bicycles. With a minimum of planning, I had one of the most memorable vacations ever with two young family members. We picked random bike trails. We saw a bear. We had most of the park to ourselves. We roasted marshmallows over a fire. We saw deer, and a coyote. We were perfectly warm in the tent overnight. The kids pronounced it “Best Day Ever!” Be open for an opportunity and when you see it, take it! https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/camping.htm
