Spam Free Maps II : India

Hello local Guides,

Google maps usage and contribution in India Has increased too much in past few years as people started using maps to finding new business and things to do or just to reach a new location or for everyday transit.

With this increase there is also a rise in the number of spam photos and places,

Which might be on Maps because of following reasons

  1. lack of knowledge
Example you might have seen many people creating place using their names or adding their home on Maps.
  2. Uploads made by mistake
This happens mostly with elderly people or new smartphone users, they randomly upload photos and selfies on Maps.
  3. Done purposely to gain points.
few people just to increase their points or number of contribution upload poor quality images or multiple images of single place or create a duplicate place.

As we are still having Lock down and not able to contribute like we used to I decided to come back with Spam free India - II.

Why this is important:

Recently while searching for some essential stores nearby, I found many places have duplicates and are located on different spots in a same area.
I also noticed some of the places had personal pictures or videos of entertainment.

Some of the addresses and categories were mismatched.
This wrong or inappropriate information will create confusion for users as people will not be able to reach the location or keep searching for the original addresses and information about the business/Place.

Our little help can make a difference and this will also help to have more accurate information on Maps.
Let’s do this. Let’s make Google maps free of spam again.

I request Local Guides across India to support this cause by organizing meetup.
Select any date in the month of August 2020 and conduct a meet up where we will delete fake or inappropriate photos and edit the duplicate places on Maps.

Pointers for those planning to join:

Select the Meet up topic : Spam Free Maps - II + Your City (E.g. Spam Free Maps- II : Rajkot).

After the Google Team approve your meet-up a post is created.

Make a comment here and add the link to your meet up post

Share the meetup information on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to attract participants from your community.

If you have seen similar issue in your Country
You too can join this mission.
Follow the steps mentioned above and let’s make Google maps spam free around the world.

Thank You

That would be great ! @rajuroyal

This is the need of the hour.

I have deleted so many duplicate locations and also checked the Facts in my locality already.

Would be happy to be a part of this.

@rajuroyal this indeed would be a great support for the community at large to provide accuracy into the maps.

I have came across mainly wrong map location and duplication of places. As good as 4-5 DMart like store with either different names or nearby locations / across the road or even 500 MTRS away .,

I also agree that some of the posts are not relevant which might have been post by users unknowingly but needs moderation or correction.

I will wholeheartedly be in with the cause …

Hello @rajuroyal

That’s a highly benevolent exercise you are taking up.

You have listed some of the wrongdoings.

Here, I wish to add some more in the various categories.

Place creation.

Inclusion of extra information over and above the display name visible on the signage.

Such as the name of the creator, adjectives describing the business, the address, phone number, emoticons.

Misleading phone numbers & website details.

Unintelligible names.

Possibly we are accustomed to guessing what a “Pancher Shap” means. But is it correct to leave that?

Photos

Superimposed text and phone numbers (Other than watermark). In most of the cases that turn out to be spam.

Pics of prohibited places. As an example, in India, there are many civilian enclaves in military airports. Here, clicking a photo on the Tarmac is an offence. However, users go on posting pictures even of such sites.

Blurry, out of focus, disoriented pictures.

Copy-pasting photos through the ones available in the public domain, adding screenshots or content received through social media.

Multiple photos clicked through slight variation of viewing angle.

Reviews.

Creating a review on behalf of someone else.

Stuffing of text to cross the 200 characters expectation.

Copy-pasting content from encyclopedia sites.

Incomprehensible content.

Would you be taking up these issues also?
