South Dakota #StateChallenge Meet-up and Trivia Quiz Study Guide

What do you know about the state of South Dakota? Mount Rushmore is in South Dakota. What else do you know?

…and the GUEST HOST for the state of South Dakota?? @JaneBurunina !!!

In an effort to make sure that all attendees have a chance to become the KING/QUEEN of the featured state, we have decided to give all former Trivia Kings and Queens a deficit of “-200” points for each time they have previously won 1st place.

  1. This should give those who haven’t won before a better chance
  2. Provide some additional challenge to those who have won before

Here are our previous winners and their current deficits.

Some
Fun
Facts

Unique fun places to visit and check out!

  • Spirit Mound State Historic Prairie - alternately described as a “mountain of evil spirits”, a “hill of little people”, and a “place of Devils.” The Sioux, Omaha, and Otoe tribes told of 18-inch tall humans with “remarkable large heads” who inhabited the site. Armed with arrows, these spirits attacked anyone who approached the hill. Reference

  • Geographic Center of the Nation Monument - The center of the contiguous United States is marked by a small plaque and plinth in Kansas, the actual center of the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska) is off in a field in South Dakota. While the actual center of the nation is located on private property, the Geographic Center of the Nation Monument is located in Belle Fourche in western South Dakota. The National Geodetic Survey designated Belle Fourche as the town closest to the actual site and the monument was placed there. The 21-foot diameter monument is located next to the Center of the Nation Visitor Center. Reference AtlasObscura and TravelSouthDakota

  • Giant Prairie Dog Statue - Surrounded by an actual prairie dog colony, this concrete giant towers 12 ft. over its little friends at a whopping 6 tons. The attraction is free, and for $.50 you can buy peanuts at the Ranch Store Gift Shop to feed the (in comparison) teensy prairie dogs of the non-concrete variety. Reference

  • The World’s Only Corn Palace - In 1892, South Dakota was begging for settlers. In order to showcase their magnificently rich soil, local officials commissioned the building of the Corn Palace in the middle of Mitchell, a town that bills itself as the “Corn Capital of the World.”

    • The Corn Palace has been rebuilt several times since its initial construction, first as part of Mitchell’s unsuccessful 1905 bid to replace Pierre as the state capital, and later to enhance its status as a tourist attraction. The distinctive Russian onion domes and minarets were added in 1937.

    • The Corn Palace is built out of concrete, not corn. However, each year, the entire exterior is redecorated in murals made out of corn and various other local grains and grasses. These decorative facades are redesigned annually around a different theme created by local artists. Decorations from years past are displayed inside the building itself.

  • Art Alley - Unique back alley with buildings covered in vividly colored graffiti-style murals & writing. Reference

  • Skeleton Man Walking Skeleton Dinosaur - An enormous skeletal man walking his skeleton dinosaur appears to be heading to the Original 1880 Town of Midland, South Dakota. The tiny town is full of buildings from the 1880s to the 1920s, many of which are packed with artifacts, relics, and photographs from pioneer days. People can rent period costumes and stroll around town reenacting their wildest Old West fantasies. Reference

  • The Mammoth Site - Many mammoth remains, preserved in an old sinkhole, are shown off at this museum & research center. You can tour this indoor active dig site and view Ice Age fossils.

  • Devil’s Gulch Park - Stand on the footbridge spanning the chasm of Devil’s Gulch and imagine the pounding of horses’ hooves. Gunshots echoing along quartzite rock walls and the shouts of a posse as they pursue outlaw Jesse James. Discover unique rock formations and points of interest such as the Devil’s Falls and the Devil’s Stairway while hiking the scenic trails. Reference

  • Sturgis City - Sturgis is notable as the location of one of the largest annual motorcycle events in the world: the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which lasts for 10 days beginning on the first Friday of August. It attracts large numbers of motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world. Reference

  • Deadwood City - In 1876, the Wild West town of Deadwood was born when gold prospectors came across a gulch full of dead trees and a creek full of gold. Historic Deadwood, SD is just as wild today as it was when legends like Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Seth Bullock roamed the streets. Practically overnight, the tiny gold camp boomed into a town that played by its own rules that attracted outlaws, gamblers, and gunslingers along with the gold seekers. Reference
