Sompura Mahavira locally known as Paharpur Buddhist Bihar, situated at Paharpur in Naogaon District Bangladesh. It is near about 35 km from Naogaon city.
Second Pal king Dharmapal Deb (770-810 AD) built this remarkable monastery. The measurement of this monastery approx. 283.8 meter X 282.07 meter. There are 177 cell for monk around the outside boundary of the monastery.
In front of monk cell there was a stretched verandah available. The main entry of this monastery is situated at center of north side boundary which is actually arcades with houses connected. There is a ruined temple situated in the center of the monastery. In 1985 it was designated as World Heritage site by UNESCO. It was an intellectual place for Buddhist (Buddha Dharma) Dharmic Traditions. Not only from Indian Subcontinent but also from China, Tibet, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia so many Buddhist were came here for Dharmic tradition. In 10th century spiritual preceptor Atish Dipankar Sriggan was the chancellor of this monastery.
How to reach there from Dhaka:
Paharpur union is situated in Naogaon city which is under Rajshahi Division. Take inter-district bus from Dhaka to Naogaon then you can take local transport. By train you can go to Shantahar station from Dhaka then take local transport.
Timetable:
During summer the Buddhist Bihar remains open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and in winter it is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. In both time it remains close from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM for lunch break. Throughout the year Sunday is closed as general holiday and on Monday it opens from 2:00 PM.
