Something new on the map I do not recognize.

I have long wished for a way that Google Maps could identify neighborhoods, entertainment districts, parks, malls, etc. Things that are not specific single addresses but containers of many specific addresses.

I was finishing up a review and what you see in the screenshot just appeared on my screen. I was not searching for it. And it is something I have never seen before. An area like a neighborhood highlighted and the borders marked in red.

Can someone explain to me what exactly I am looking at?

Hello @FogCityNative !

I think it is exactly what you were wishing for, a neighbourhood that Google maps distinguishes within the city. It is the same highlighting and bordering maps makes when you click on the names or search for cities or countries.

Just try typing into the search field or clicking a name of a place on the map.

According to my observations these neighbourhood names are generally not as accurate as city names, mainly because these are less codified and more dependent on local collective knowledge. It might be a good area for local guides to improve Google maps.
