Something incredible happened to me - My first flight ever was due to Connect Live event

Dear Local Guides fellows and Googlers.
I want to share with you my amazing story which lead to the Connect Live 2019 event.

As you know, every Local Guide on certain level have a opportunity to send application and try be one of the attendees on biggest official international event for most passionate Local Guide members.

I was sending my applications for 3 years and I was never been selected as an attendes until now. This year was different. I received email with negative response like many of us and I dealt with it.
Anyway, something unbelievable happened to me and I got email “You’re in!” from Google on mid of September.
I couldn’t believed it at all and I was thought that this must be some kind of error, maybe in Matrix :slightly_smiling_face: . So, I ignored this email for a few days. After some time I started believe that it can be actually a true and I spread this information with my Czech Local Guides community. I was enormous happy.
I had never been on the plane before and I even didn’t know what to do before my longest - 13+ hours on the go and over 10 000 kilometres, trip of my life.
I had just a couple of days to obtain my passport, ESTA and choose my flight ticket.

Great thing about this event is that you can flight prior to the official event and so I did. I came to USA 10 days prior with my girlfriend and together we were visited some cool places in California - PIER39, Alcatraz, the Golden Bridge, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Mount Diablo or Yosemite national park.

But straight to the Connect Live 2019 event. This event changed my perception about this program. I knew that this community is amazing, but I did not have a clue how much. All people was so nice, friendly and polite. I felt like in a dream, but it wasn’t dream, this was a reality.
This event was a huge and I think (my opinion) it may have a big impact to all active Local Guide members around the world, because we could tell our problems and/or ideas directly to Googlers and they care.

This event was amazing - I made a new friendship, I learned something new, I tasted some interesting sweets from other countries, got life experiences and last but not least I have a lots of good memories.

At the end I want to thank you to all Googlers who been there and listened us, next very big thanks goes to LG team in Google, mainly to @TraciC and also to @brittym and to all 199 other Local Guides which created fantastic vibes during four days.
Thank you for that opportunity be one of the 200 attenders!

@Rohlik Thanks for sharing about your experience as a first time Connect Live attendee. What a special exciting experience that must have been. And that it was your first flight on an airplane would have been doubly special.

What did your friends and family think of your experience when you got home?

Thank you for sharing @Rohlik . I am also a Level 8 LG and permanently reside in beautiful Colorado Springs but was unfortunately not selected to attend CL2019 — what would be your advise for me if given another opportunity to apply?

@CatC My first and most important advice is - do not give up!

It is hard to give you another advices, because nobody knows selection criteria which are applied to applications. But as you propably know, Google looking for:

  • High-quality, well-rounded, and consistent contributions on Google Maps over the past 12 months
  • Consistent involvement with the Local Guides community such as actively contributing on Connect or/and hosting meet-ups.

Take a shot next year

Hi @Rohlik !

Thanks for sharing your story!

You know, I also have the same story:) Firstly, I received email with negative response. And when I got email “You’re in!”, I couldn’t believe it. It’s like jumping into the last car of an outgoing train.

And I’m so glad that we were able to attend this wonderful event and get so great experience!
