Local Guides host amazing meet-ups all around the world, and they share recaps of their experiences on Connect. Let’s take a look at some of the best recaps from June 2021. Note*: Some of these recaps describe offline meet-ups. Before you decide to join an offline meet-up in your region, please consider the local health regulations and guidelines. The safety of our community is our priority.*
Inclusivity
“[Recap] : Maps for Moms virtual meet-up #mapsforall” and “[Recap] : Pride friendly Maps virtual meet-up”
In June, @Globe_trotter_Ish shared two meet-up recaps from her #MapsForAll series. The series aims to encourage Local Guides to think about the needs of different communities when contributing on Google Maps. Isha’s first recap captured the stories of Local Guides who are mothers or who have helped mothers and parents find the best places to go with their children. The second recap focused on ways Local Guides can highlight LGBTQ+ safe spaces on Google Maps. Watch special guest @Adrian_Lunsong talk about the meaning and history of Pride Month here.
“Recap: Accessibility Uncovered 6.0”
@EmekaUlor shared the recap of the sixth monthly Accessibility Uncovered webinar. In it, he introduced Local Guide host @Zuhralc and their guest, Odunola Ojewumi. Odunola is a wheelchair user who’s been advocating for the rights of people with disabilities since the age of 16. Emeka made sure to include her powerful words to the attendees to keep mapping accessibility. Learn more in the recap.
Map editing and supporting small businesses
“Recap: Best Practices for Adding a Place to Maps (A&B)”
If you ever wondered how other Local Guides added places on the map, then you might enjoy @Ewaade_3A ’s recap. She took the time to describe three common ways she and her attendees use to add places. She incorporated questions, answers, and best practices that the participants discussed, which adds even more value to her post. Find out more in her recap.
“[RECAP] Support Small Businesses at Panthapath, Dhaka”
@AbdullahAM continued his quest for improving the information on Maps in support of local businesses. This time, he and the attending Local Guides took a walk around Panthapath in Dhaka, Bangladesh. They successfully added new places and updated addresses, working hours, and more. If you’re thinking about organizing a similar meet-up, check out Abdullah’s recap for inspiration.
“[RECAP] Let’s Support Small Businesses-P5”
A group of three Local Guides also supported the businesses around Amrita Lal Dey College in Barishal, Bangladesh, despite the rain that day. @KamalHossenR chose the location not only because it’s popular, but also because he completed part of his education there! His map editing walk focused on adding places, updating information, and sharing fresh photos and reviews. See how Kamal felt going back to his school in his recap.
Bringing communities together
The seventh-anniversary meet-up of the Bangladesh Local Guides brought together over 140 passionate Local Guides and prominent guests. But celebrating this amazing milestone was just half of the event hosted by @SirajulAzad . By tradition, the team of organizers used the occasion to raise awareness about an important issue, this time: saving energy. Read more about this great event in Sirajul’s brilliant recap.
#TeamTacos is the memorable name Local Guides from Mexico crafted for themselves. After keeping in touch on Connect for several months, they finally met in real life at La Mexicana Park in Mexico City. And did they have fun! @LaloPadilla told us all about their long-awaited meet-up in his recap, which features awesome group photos and helpful snaps of the park’s facilities.
“Manchester Local Guides May 2021: Bury Markets & ELR Heritage Railway Photowalk [RECAP]”
One more group of Local Guides met offline for the first time in a while, and that’s the Manchester Local Guides. Host @PeteMHW had organized a tour of “Britain’s Favourite Market” for 2019, Bury Market, a 90-minute ride on a steam hauled train, and a drink alongside the tracks. Enjoy the smiles of the Local Guides during their many adventures that day in Pete’s recap.
#StateChallenge
“[RECAP] Ohio #StateChallenge Meet-up”
The #StateChallenge is one of the most entertaining and longest-running virtual meet-up series on Connect. And it seems like @Erna_LaBeau had the most fun at the Ohio meet-up, which she co-hosted with main organizers @Denise_Barlock and @jayasimha78 from Denise’s RV! Erna shared examples of some funny wrong answers from the quiz, but who won in the end? Find out in the recap.
“Re-cap of #City Challenge Amritsar”
It’s easy to feel @RosyKohli ’s excitement for getting to host her second #CityChallenge meet-up on the first birthday of the #StateChallenge, from which it came to be. In the recap, she told us how she prepared the questions with the help of @SilvyC and how much everyone enjoyed themselves answering them and celebrating together. Check out their birthday photos in her post.
