We started our recaps round-up series in 2019, following a suggestion from you, our community. Over the years, we’ve celebrated your amazing meet-ups and initiatives, which you continued to host with passion in 2021.We’re looking back on some of the 100+ incredible recaps we highlighted last year. We love reading about your experiences, so keep sharing your helpful recaps on Connect!
Mapping your world
Your creativity and unique interests never cease to amaze us. One great example is @kasunaaa and his passion for mapping underwater. See how he and fellow Local Guides added Sri Lanka’s first underwater museum in this recap.
Helping all groups of society is one of Local Guides’ defining traits. In 2021, @Melissa_Langlois shared a fantastic recap full of tips for contributing to playgrounds that can help guide parents and guardians to the most suitable place for their kids.
Supporting small businesses
Local Guides continued to show love for small and local businesses on Google Maps during another challenging year. @Zuhralc demonstrated her compassion and readiness to help her community in Kenya in meet-ups like this one about supporting businesses in more rural areas.
Meanwhile, @AbdullahAM organized a series of meet-ups across Bangladesh to add missing places, update business details, and talk to business owners about the benefits of managing their listing on Google Maps. Check out this recap to learn more.
We also loved @AlexandreCampbell ’s initiative to host a virtual mini-series in three languages — Spanish, Portuguese, and English. Attendees talked about how Local Guides can help small businesses effectively and respectfully.
Accessibility and inclusivity
@NareshDarji was one of those Local Guides who ventured out safely last year to help make the world a more accessible place. He mapped the accessibility features of important buildings like the Gandhinagar Capital Railway Station and told us about it in his great recap.
During her first in-real-life accessibility walk for 2021, inclusivity advocate @Globe_trotter_Ish and fellow Local Guides in Mumbai shared photos and reviews and updated accessibility details on the map. They also made it a point to spread awareness about the topic.
Photography
@TusharSuradkar has been hosting a lot of meet-ups dedicated to accessibility and taking storefront photos. In this recap, he gave examples of what makes a photo of a business helpful: capturing accessibility features, menus, parking spaces, and more.
We loved @PaulPavlinovich ’s Online Photo Workshop back in 2020, and in the 2021 reunion recap, we saw just how much his educational series inspired Local Guides to improve their photography skills. Each participant shared their favorite photo on Google Maps, showcasing the many ways they bring value to others on the map.
Series and challenges
To say that @Denise_Barlock, @Kwiksatik, and @jayasimha78’s 2020 #StateChallenge took Connect by storm would be an understatement. The series sparked the creation of 2021 challenges, like the #WorldChallenge, #CityChallenge, #AwarenessChallenge, and #HolidayChallenge. They offer Local Guides a fun way to test their knowledge about the world, so if that sounds interesting to you, keep an eye on the upcoming meet-ups section for events to join.
The Portuguese-speaking community met every month last year for their Encontro Mensal meet-ups. @AlexandreCampbell, @RogerOhayashi, and @SarahKa took turns organizing challenges and leading conversations that strengthened the connection between the Local Guides.
@EmekaUlor and the OneAccessibility team also hosted monthly events, part of the Accessibility Uncovered Webinar series. Each time, a special guest shared insights into accessibility and inclusivity in business and society and the ways Local Guides help to promote that.
In 2021, we got to learn about dishes from around the world by watching @AdrianLunsong cook them during his #LocalGuidesKitchen live streams. And in July, Connect Moderators and Local Guides turned Connect’s 5th birthday into a month-long celebration! You can find all the birthday meet-ups in @KashifMisidia’s mega recap and check out some of our favorites in our special round-up edition.
Thank you, Local Guides, Guiding Stars, Accessibility Champions, and Meet-up Champions for helping others, on Google Maps and off! Find out all our favorite meet-up recaps here.
