Some of our favorite virtual resources for parents and families at home

For those Local Guides in our community who are also parents, we wanted to share some fun resources you can enjoy with your families at home.

Virtual theme park rides

While many of us can’t travel right now, you can go on a virtual vacation through Street View, or even hop on a ride at Disney World. The Disney Parks YouTube channel also features videos of the fireworks shows and parades that will allow you to experience some magic no matter where you are. There are also adult-focused adventure videos for the parents to watch after the kids fall asleep.

Playlists to watch at home

YouTube’s Watch at Home with Your Kids playlist features fun entertainment that’s appropriate for small children and parents alike. Just grab some popcorn and watch these family-friendly shows, including YouTube Originals along with classic favorites, at home with your family.

Remote field trips

Since many parents are home-schooling their children at this time, many museums, including the Museum of Natural History in New York City, are offering the opportunity to go on a virtual field trip. You can explore the exhibits, teach the children via the museum’s site for kids, and test what you’ve learned on Kahoot.

Parents, have you tried any of these resources? Do you have others to share with your fellow Local Guides? Let us know in the comments below.

Our local newspaper, The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, offers some great resources for kids in it’s Kids Gazette, recently launched after local schools close. Kids have submitted stories and it features both crafts and some learning activities three times a week.

In this pandemic situation we can make them learn about cleanliness and hygiene. Usually kids aren’t that serious aboout being clean. During lockdown I have made some rules for hygiene and cleankiness which eveeyone follows specially kids. And they are loving it too because I bought cartoon shaped sanitizer bottles and handwash container. This way they enjoy washing hands and using sanitizer too.
