Here are some lesser-known facts about Mumbai’s south side.
South Mumbai as we call it; is also an oldest part of Mumbai. Bombay was renamed Mumbai after the local Goddess “Mumba devi.” Mumba Devi temple is in the South Mumbai neighborhood of Bhuleshwar.
“The Metro Cinema” (now known as Metro Inox Cinema) is an “Art Deco Heritage grade movie theater” in Dhobi Talav that was built in 1938 by the famous Hollywood studio “Metro-Golden-Mayer (MGM) to showcase their production. (Something to add this but not related to Mumbai, there is another Metro Cinema Theatre in Kolkata built at the same period by MGM!)
'Asiatic Society of Mumbai Town Hall", Fort is also considered as heritage architecture. “St. Thomas’ Cathedral of Mumbai”, 300 years old; one of the oldest churches in Mumbai is located on walking distance from it.
“Rajabai Clock Tower” famously known as “Rajabhai Tower” located very next to University of Mumbai in Fort area**.** A world heritage site is standing tall with 250 feet (85 mtr). Victoria style architecture looks beautiful and designed very similar to Big Ben of London.
Kala Ghoda, a small area near Fort, is very famous cultural, artistic mainstream location which includes a world famous “Kala Ghoda Art festival”.
There are few old churches located in this area, including Bombay Baptist Church and the Church of St John the Evangelist, also known as the Afghan Church in Navy nagar area. It was built by British in the memory of those who died during the first afghan war in 1842 at Kabul.
It’s also worth noting that the very first motor bus service in India began in Mumbai on July 15, 1926, with a route running from Afghan Church to Crawford Market.
On December 30, 1865, Rudyard Kipling, the world’s most famous author of “The Jungle Book” and Nobel laureate, was born in the campus of J.J. School of Arts near Dhobi Talav area.
Bombay High Court or High court of Bombay, one of the oldest high courts of India and it serves as the high court for the states of Maharashtra, Goa and union territory of Dadra and Nagar haveli and Daman and Diu respectively.
Bombay Gymkhana, located near Fort, is Mumbai’s oldest gymkhana and is famous for hosting the first ever cricket test match on December 15, 1933. Bombay Gymkhana Rugby Club is also located on the premises.
