Solved Why photos from some users appear to be turned or the wrong side up in their posts.

In the past, many times I was getting frustrated by seeing photos turned by ninety or even one eighty degrees, in some of the posts.

Initially, I concluded that as a sign of carelessness by the user. However, afterwards, I came across stories of how a perfectly oriented picture appeared disoriented & then the users struggled to re-orient that. Sometimes those repeated edits bore the brunt of becoming spam!

After many searches, I discovered a possible explanation for the error.
The problem is related to the equipment utilized for capturing the pic.

Traditional phones store the photos in landscape mode only even if you hold that in portrait orientation. However, the software corrects that with an EXIF tag.
Whereas, the modern phones remove the disorientation & store the photos in a proper perspective. The rotation sensors in the current hardware eliminate the trouble.

To resolve the problem, either one needs editing the EXIF data or correcting the orientation through a suitable image processing program.

The disorientation becomes apparent in a preview & then instead of struggling with edits, one should correct the photo first & then proceed to publish.

That’s correct @C_T

Different device use internal (custom) data for the orientation, that are not correctly written on the EXIF.

What I always do is to upload my photos on Google Photo, and to fix the orientation in there

Thank you @C_T , for your time and help!

My phone is relatively modern, a Samsung Galaxy S9. I will try follow your advice (even my abilities are not excellent).

Best wishes!

Thanks for the clarification @LiliSol

Though the phone model does contain a rotation sensor, the software may be adding EXIF data which can’t be decoded by some websites. Correcting the orientation beforehand remains the only solution.

Also, please note that correcting the orientation through Google photos or Snapseed is not that difficult. Tap the three sliders at the bottom and then in the next screen, you can find the tool for rotation.

Thank you @ErmesT , I will try your your suggestion.

Best wishes!

Many thanks, @C_T !

I tried to rotate the photo but in the phone gallery, not in the “Google Photos” and resulted with the same problem: when I am posting it’s rotated.

I will try harder :grinning: .

I am grateful for your support and patience.
