Hello everybody! My name is Raúl, I’m from México City and today I’m going to tell you how I met a famous chef. Also I’m going to take this opportunity to answer the question “What is the most interesting thing you’ve done as a Local Guide?” because not only was interesting, it was so random.
So, one day a friend and I were talking and both said we wanted some ramen, we have this little habit to eat ramen together and try it at different places. I told her that a new ramen place had opened really close from my apartment and if she wanted we cloud try there. She aggred and that afternoon we went to “Restaurante Yun”.
We ate there, all was really good and when we left, Google Maps ask me to answer some questions about the place, in that moment I didn’t had the habit to do it, but I was so satisfied that I happily do it. The question I respond was about another user asked if that was the restaurant of “el chino” and I didn’t even knew who was “el chino”. I asked my friend and she told me that “el chino” is the chef and owner of that restaurant, that he was even there! Obviously I didn’t recognized him but anyway, I wrote the answer for that user with some information she gave me and post it.
Here: (by the way, I tried to opened to see the whole answer but I couldn’t do it )
After that I asked my friend who was him and she told me that he is famous because he was in MasterChef! and not only that, he f**king won it!
I was like “WEEEEY” (it’s like dudeeee but mexican) I couldn’t believe it, we just had ate in a famous restaurant by a famous chef! Suddenly it hit me: "THE REVIEW! THE ANSWER! THAT THING I SAID! " btw I didn’t said anything mean but my answer wasn’t all rainbows and flowers, I just, said the truth.
Back home I search online and it was truth, that restaurant belongs to a MasterChef winner. His name is Ismael Zhu Li aka “el chino” (i’m so so sorry for that racist nickname but trust me, I’m trying really hard to educate my people), here an articule about him and his restaurant:
A few days later I honestly forgot about that, when I started to receive a lot of notifications about the answer I posted. First reached 500 views, then 1,000, 2,000… 3,000 views and I was like “what is happening, why is this growing?” a part of me was happy because I have never reached those views but then I realize that by this point he probably saw it to and that make me losing it. Really. I was so ashamed lol, I don’t know why but I didn’t even wanted to walk by his restaurant which is really REALLY close to my house. I know I was so ridiculous, because I am not a food critic or anything like that I was nobody! Just some guy with a review that went a little viral, but still I was losing it (inventada les decimos acá ).
Months later we went to ate there again, I came back to my senses, grown some hair chest and obviously more wisdom (love those little monkey emojis). We arrive, all good, as always a lot of people so we mixed up.
So… we where there, just eating some ramen, looking pretty and all when at the half of our meal and out of nowhere fricking Ismael “Mr. I WON MasterChef” came out and start to approach to all the tables to said hi. My friend was fangirling and started to get excited because she wanted a picture with him but I left my body, I got really nervous remember what happened last time, I was la inventada again. Finally he stood in front of us, we greet each other, he asked how was the food and I couldn’t contain myself and told him that it need a little more of spiciness (sorry but what can I say, I’m mexican). Ismael laughed and agreed with me in that point, and then he looked me and said: “I think I know you”.
My face was so red (also because he is really cute, just in case you wonder it), quickly my friend rescue me and asked him for a photo so that awkward moment ended but I swear that went he left he was still watched me, I’m pretty sure he knew it but I like to think that.
We left, I rated him again and still didn’t gave him 5 stars sorry but honestly first guys.
This one didn’t went viral so my mental health appreciate that, but it was definitely a really fun experience and all thanks to an answer that I posted it on Google Maps as a Local Guide.
And that’s all! Muchas gracias to all for taking time to read this and if you went this fair then I’ll share you the location of Ismael’s ramen restaurant so the next time you visit Mexico City you could go, and if there is a mexican fellow here in the city date la oportunidad de ir y conocerlo. Maybe you have luck and see Ismael too.
Saludos, Raúl.
P.S. I’m so sorry if I make some grammar mistakes, my English is a little rusty feel free to correct me. Thanks!
