This article features the story of a small Franconian town of Bamberg in Germany.
Ever had a beer that was smoky and spicy? Bamberg, a small town in the Franconian region of Germany introduced the smoked beer to the world. The Bambergers call it Rauchbier! The smoked beer was discovered as a result of an accident at a brewer’s malt store. Using that malt to brew another kind of beer must have been the wiser choice than to throw away all of the burnt malt. Lady luck was with Mr.Brewer and that’s how everyone grew on to love this new flavour of beer. Who knew hundreds of years later this beer would have been considered an unmissable item in the list of things to see and eat in Bamberg. Yes, today if you leave Bamberg without having a pint of the Rauchbier your other fellow travellers would not be impressed!
So now that you know about it, it should be on the top of your list of things to do in Bamberg. Write it!
- CHUG A MUG of the smoked beer!
Then comes the question “But where from?”.
The answer is Rauchbierbrauerei Schlenkerla. Why so? Well they have an experience right down to the 6th generation! In addition to this they also have gothic vaults and the beer there is served “directly from the wooden barrel” as mentioned on their official site! If you want to know my opinion, I would say I absolutely love places with a history so I would give a heads up! A place that gives me a peek into its history? I love such places which is why I absolutely love this big brewery. Yes, it’s a big place but full of people all the time! We were seated in the room to the right of the entrance. It’s brighter and perfect for taking great pictures. My husband and I ordered typical German dishes along with the smoked beer. He has tried almost all the different types of beer and he absolutely loved this one. You know how many beers taste similar? Well, not this one! That’s why it’s such a refreshing delve from your weekend beers with friends! Personally I don’t like beer but I loved the taste of this one. Took sips from my love’s beer! As I had ordered a lemonade before that I have to say that never have I had such a good lemonade before!
They serve quality food which can also become your comfort food and if you are a fan of German wursts (sausages), you are so going to love this place! If you have never had the wursts but love sausages, you are definitely missing out on something special! If you don’t like the plain sausages but love the barbequed ones, you are going to love wursts. My personal favourite wurst has to be the Frankische Bratwurst served with Kartoffelsalat (potatosalad). What’s yours?
A small tip would be to carry cash with you as this place doesn’t accept credit cards. The nearest ATM is a 10 minute walk away. Many places in Germany do not accept credit cards so always keep some cash in handy.
