On my recent trip in Oman, I visited the Atair Sinkhole. During this visit it was the end of the dry season so was very dried up. During the wet season it fills up and people can swim. It is a lovely quiet area.
Hey @TheEagleEye ,
While going through your post, I couldn’t think of anything else than the fact that nature is such a miracle worker.
There is a myth surrounding the natural sinkhole believing that it was formed by the falling of a star, not because of the collapsing of the surface due to the limestone layers. :]
Thank you for sharing this interesting place with us.
By the way, the link you’ve shared with the reviews and photos is broken, maybe you can upload it again.
Thanks for your reply @Deskata . It is interesting how these sinkholes occur but usually when the rock below and just collapse. Countries that do fracking may find this occuring in the future because the rock foundation of the earth has been fractured.
Thanks for letting me know about the link which I have fixed.
I see you are fairly new to Connect. Are you going to Introduce yourself? Welcome.
Thank you for the welcome @TheEagleEye . I’m glad I’m part of such an amazing community.
I will most certainly introduce myself in the near future. Stay tuned. :]
What an amazing place @TheEagleEye . Have you ever seen it with water? I wonder what colour the water is? Would you have to climb down a long way to go swimming, or are there paths? I’d love to know more.
Wow @TheEagleEye switch to adventure mode ON
Hello @JustineE , I hope you are well and are going to apply for Connect Live 2020.
I haven’t seen this sinkhole with water but I intend to visit the area again for a week in September. It will then have water in it after the cyclone season. The sinkholes can get quite full. Look out in next couple of days as I did go to another sinkhole during this trip which has caves and you will be surprised in how the caves were discovered. This particular sinkhole didn’t have stairs although there was a track which was blocked off and a sign warning of danger, but I climbed over and went down a little way. I could have gone down further but time wasn’t on my side.
I posted this post in January 2019 about another sinkhole which I did swim in and jumped from high up. It was very deep even though the level had dropped. The water was surprisingly clean, although I didn’t open my eyes under water or open my mouth. This sinkhole is very popular with locals and tourists because it is close to Muscat which is the capital of Oman. It does have concrete stairs, and it does go down far.
@Deskata just adding you in case you wanted to see this reply.
Thanks @Nyainurjanah , my adventure mode is always on and ready for most adventures.
Hi @TheEagleEye . I am well, thank you and yes, I do intend to apply again this year. I hope you are too?
