Sinhala new year is one of the main cultural occasion of Sri Lanka. In this occasion, e first two rituals belong to the; old year’ whereas the latter two rituals belong to the “New Year’. All the activities of the past year are to be considered as past or gone. The New Year should be ‘New’ in real sense of the word. Therefore, all make it to a point to complete all their work before the ‘interim period’ – ‘nonagathaya’ begins. Even children are advised not to engage in any activity and the elders spend their time without engaging in any serious activity. They consider the ‘Transition time’ is so inauspicious that no work should begin during that time. After the transition time is over it is the renewal; the beginning of a new cycle.people all over the country have a special meal at the same auspicious time. This photo is of a traditional arrangement of a new year meal. The main food is milk rice which is made in an auspicious time. The table includes several sweetmeats such as kawum, kokis. Each and every house they prepare such new year food arrangement as best as they can afford.
