The Shree Rajrajeshwar Mahadev Temple in Udaipur, Rajasthan, stands as a serene symbol of devotion and Rajput architectural finesse. Located near the historical Debari Darwaja on Airport Road, this ancient temple was constructed between 1813 and 1817 AD by the mother of Maharana Raj Singh in his memory. Managed by the Eklingji Trust, it remains an overlooked yet profound heritage site reflecting Udaipur’s spiritual and artistic grandeur.
Built entirely of stone on an elevated platform, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and houses a striking Chaturmukhi Shivling sculpted from bluish stone. Each face of Lord Shiva expresses a distinct emotion peace, anger, love, and wonder symbolizing the divine balance of creation. The temple’s design elegantly blends simplicity and spiritual symbolism, a hallmark of Mewar’s temple art.
Adjacent lies a beautifully constructed stepwell featuring artistic niches, carved steps, and a small hall upheld by twin stone pillars. Although the attached Dharamshala lies in ruins, it once provided rest to pilgrims and travelers. The surrounding area includes three cenotaphs, the central one honoring Gaura Singh Rathore, a Rajput warrior who heroically fell fighting Aurangzeb’s army.
This hidden historical site, often missed by tourists, offers an enriching glimpse into Udaipur’s legacy of valor, artistry, and faith. There is no entry fee, and an hour’s visit is perfect for history lovers and heritage explorers.
