When we have the chance to leave quarantine, there will be a rush to return to normality with how we did things before this global pandemic. One thing I believe people will appreciate more is local knowledge and being able to be free to explore their backyards. I believe being a local guide is one of those roles in the community that are made to appreciate our surroundings and preserve places for others to enjoy.
As far as I am aware, not many of my friends are local guides or have invested the time to contribute to Google maps. So why do I do it? To provide value to others and show the fantastic secret hiding holes, views and places you wouldn’t see without some local knowledge. The local guide program is one opportunity to show the value of local knowledge.
What do I mean?
I am from New Zealand, a place famous for tourism, nature and adventure. One thing that we don’t advertise (and I am pretty sure is in every country) is the fact that locals always have a secret spot, often not publicised, but is equally as fantastic as a fully paid five-star tour.
For example, here’s my secret spot that even other New Zealanders don’t know, right in the heart of our biggest city. For those chasing pictures for the gram here is one that should be on that list. You get a panoramic view of the city, on the right, you are directly under the harbour bridge, and best of all, it’s a quiet spot! (Forgot to mention its free!)
I normally come here to relax, wind down and to appreciate the city life - Although we are a small nation, every day this city grows.
I encourage you all to share your local secret spot as this is one way to ensure others will enjoy it for future generations! (Also your gram and Local guide points will benefit as a result)
