I’ve traveled quite a bit in my life time and Google Maps has changed everything for me. It’s so much easier to get around. What makes it far more interesting in my current home of Kigali, Rwanda is that I feel as though I have an even greater impact on the local community. There are many small businesses in Rwanda that don’t necessarily think of their online presence when they open up a restaurant or shop. If I find a new spot, I post it on Google Maps to not only help the business, but also help travelers find it. I also leave short reviews to share my experience as well as share any special features of the location.
Businesses can come and go, so it’s worth ensuring that the content on Maps reflects the rapid growth and development of this city. For international visitors, it’s important to have reliable information about an unknown city and I think I’m helping to make it a little clearer. It’s the most rewarding part of being a local guide.
