Shigaraki (map location - https://goo.gl/maps/oxGejk83dtSd7t4w6 ), regarded as the ‘Pottery Capital’ of Japan, has a lot going for it. If you are a fan of pottery & ceramics, then this town is paradise - very second shop is a store, or maker, of pottery. There is even a museum & university here. But there is a lot more than pottery here. Like any small rural town in Japan, Shigaraki has it’s fair-share of scenery, along with an adequate selection of eateries.
Because of it’s semi-isolated location, getting here can be a problem, especially if you don’t have a vehicle. If you are coming from one of the local major cities - Kobe, Osaka, Nara, Kyoto & Otsu - there is the rail link, but you have to make several connections. No problem. You can always sit-back and enjoy the scenery as you travel.
My suggestion, if you have a vehicle you can load a couple of bicycles into, is to come here and do a cycle-tour through & about the town. Here are some suggestions - The Keimei Waterfalls ( map location - https://goo.gl/maps/1B2KG225d4zJTPa46 ), a series of waterfalls along the upper Daido River. A bike-ride checking-out the Shrines & Temples running parallel to the Shigaraki Kohgen Railine ( course details & map - https://https://www.strava.com/activities/2712760663www.strava.com/activities/2712760663 .
These are just two ideas for your time in Shigaraki. I shall leave the rest up-to-you. Now sit back and check-out some of my photos -
