Shibuya Scramble Crossing

The Shibuya scramble crossing (渋谷スクランブル交差点, Shibuya sukuranburu kōsaten) is the renowned Tokyo Landmark, is a iconic pedestrian scramble crossing in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan, is located in front of the Shibuya Station Hachikō exit.

When vehicles frizzed out incorporarlting with traffic signal, all directions to allow pedestrians to cross the entire intersection. There are 5 major crosswalk and 10 traffic lanes. Three large video screens mounted on nearby buildings give the crossing a different dimension, as does the landmark QFRONT, and many smaller fixed advertising signs entertain commuters in its heavy traffic. And considering the amount of advertising billboards, it has been compared to Times Square in New York City.



History

This crosswalk launched in the year of 1973. That was the just crosswalk for pedestrians. Larer, in 2010 some people were started to celebrate Halloween on late October and Cosplay (costume play, people gathered on a favourite outfits of their favourite character of anime, cartoons, comic books, manga, television series, rock music performers, video games, memes etc.), New Year’s Eve at the crosswalk. In 2016 Olympics closing ceremony featured Shibuya crosswalk as the part of Tokyo summer Olympics 2020.




Average number of Pedestrians
According to Shibuya Center Street in 2016, the number of pedestrians crossing the intersection was 3,000. A 2014 flow measurement survey by the Shibuya Redevelopment Association estimated 260,000 pedestrians per day on weekdays and 390,000 on busy days, Others estimate 500,000 people on the busiest days. A 2012 SOTO Outdoor Media Survey approximately 1.5 million pedestrians per week used this crosswalk.

Cultural symmetry

Shibuya Crossing has been highlighted in various movies and series. such as Lost in Translation, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Alice in Borderland, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Popular Anime and cartoon like Bakemono no Ko" (The Boy and The Beast), Jujutsu Kaisen, and Weathering With You has been featured Shibuya scramble crosswalk.


Rules and Restrictions

For the cause of Covid-19 Pandemic, from 2020-21 to till now, new years celebration, halloween gathering has been strictly prohibited due to overcrowded, chaotic, safety and security issues. From 2023 alcohol consumption in publicly has been banned from 18:00 on 31 December to 5:00 am in January 1. Shops were requested to not sell alcohol and billboards were turned off.


But Shibuya Crossing has its own charm. There are so many places for hang out like izakaya, restaurants (wagyu beef, yakiniku, steak, ramen, sushi, onigiri, udon, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, gyudon, yakitori, takoyaki, mochi, coffee, chinese, Mexican, French, crocket, Bakery, Bento box etc.) brand shops, mall, partying centre, omiage (souvenirs), Hatchiko square, shibuya sky, and many more. In Nigh the crosswalk blinked like more dazzling and shimmering.
