Somebody who turned around and took you where you needed to go because your local language knowledge was poor and they didn’t speak English.

Mine was in Beijing. It was raining, autumn. My roommate was late and I was locked outside our building getting soaked on the street. A waiter from the restaurant across the street invited me to come inside. I accepted, reluctantly, and set at a table. I had no money on me so didn’t order anything. He brought a pot of green tea and a bowl of hot soup.

In broken Mandarin and gestures I explained I had no money. “Mehi shy” he said , “never mind”. I wish I wrote down his name. And that of the restaurant, so now (11 years later) I could give them both warm reviews for turning around my day that day.

Thank you.
