Shakshouka (شكشوكة, also spelled as Shakshuka or Chakchouka) was originally from Mediterranean area.
It is a skillet dish of eggs pouched in a sauce of tomatoes, onions, garlic, and flavoured with multiple spices.
Before quarantine, I always ordered Shakshouka for my brunch date with friends when it was on the menu. Here are some of my favorites I have ever had.
Tatte Bakery & Cafe
Tatte Bakery & Cafe is a famous chain cafe in Boston area.
It was my first time trying Shakshouka as brunch.
I was super impressed and satisfied to have something warm to start a day.

Milk & Roses
It is one of the most popular brunch spots in Greenpoint, New York and the ambiance is cozy & relaxed.
Their Shakshouka was served in a regular bowl with smaller portion which was a little disappointing but the taste was flavourful.

During quarantine, I miss the dish so much that my roommate and I started to make it ourselves with the easy version of recipe we found online that only requires limited ingredients.
Ingredients for 2:
1 spoon of olive oil
1 teaspoon of sea salt and pepper
1 chopped onion
1 chopped tomato
4 chopped mushroom
8 shrimps
4 units of garlic and crushed
1/4 bottoms of Rao’s Homemade Marinara Sauce or any similar brand
2 jumbo eggs
Some shredded mozzarella cheese
Some chopped green onion
Warm and sliced baguette
Our steps of the simple version:
- Cook onions, tomatoes, mushroom , and garlic in the skillet with olive oil for about 10 mins
- Add Rao’s Homemade Marinara Sauce into the skillet and continue to braise for 5 mins
- Cut shrimps into pieces and mix them with other ingredients
- Dip 2 holes over the ingredients and add eggs into the holes
- Spread some cheese on the top
- Cover the pot and wait 5 minutes
- Before serving, decorate it with chopped green onion and sliced baguette
See how it turns out:
It’s really easy to prepare and takes only 30 minutes to finish.
Another great reason why we love to have Shakshouka for a meal is because we only need to wash 1 skillet afterward.
