Shahi Darwaza, Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India.
Orchha Fort houses magnificent monuments and is a major tourist attraction. Due to my sufficient time, I got the opportunity to visit those monuments which are not in the priority of tourists, but some are neglected by the Archaeological Department and the government. The Shahi Darwaza is one such magnificent colossal monument which might have been used by the members of the dynasty to enter and leave the fort.
It is a two-storied huge gate whose vaulted roof is supported by two grand pointed arches. It is located near Jahangir Mahal, Rajmahal and Rai Praveen Mahal. It appears from its construction and architectural style that it must have been constructed or renovated during the reign of Raja Veer Singh Deo. On either side of the main entrance are two-storied security posts with stairs, which were accessed through arched doors. Arched balconies and inclined small square drifts are built on the first floor to keep an eye on the entrance and outside. Stairs are made from the first floor itself to reach the terrace of the main entrance. This gate is the main security gate of the inner security wall.
It’s an attraction among history buffs, and ancient architecture lovers.
