Sensō-ji Temple, Asakusa, Tokyo

Senso-ji is a beautiful Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Tokyo. I make it a point to visit this place whenever I visit Tokyo. Temple is the oldest in Tokyo and very popular with Tourists as well as locals.

Approach to the temple has many small shops and it is a very busy street.

One of the other interesting thing in Senso-ji is Omikuji Paper fortune, Who does not want to know their fortune :). It is an interesting process, you need to drop a 100Yen coin in to money collection box, then you need to shake Omikuji box and a draw a stick. This is where difficulty starts for me, since I don’t know Kanji, I need to do pattern matching to find the drawer in which my fortune paper is located.

You can pull the drawer and pick up the Omikuji paper. You can your fortune written on that. Fortunately it is also written in engish. I was told there are 7 types of fortune on these papers.

I have also seen locals tying the paper there. I was told if you get bad luck on the Omikuji you can tie it there and leave the bad fortune.

The surroundings of the temple is also very beautiful. So far I have not had chance to visit the temple in the evening. That is something I am looking forward to in my next trip.

Hi @jayasimha78 ,

Thank you for sharing this interesting story about the oldest temple in Tokyo.

I hope the Omikuji paper said a happy future to you. I am curious who prepares the papers with the telling?

@MashaPS Thank You! Yes it did mention good fortune.

That is a great question, probably some one in the temple who stores those papers in the little drawers.

i would think it is same concept of fortune cookies.

Hi @jayasimha78 ,

Thanks for your reply.

Oh yes, this is quite logic. I guess the principle is the same like with the fortune cookies.
