As a Local Guide, I often look beyond the experience a place offers. I enjoy observing the small, thoughtful details that make a place more responsible, inclusive and sustainable.
During my visit to Fort Canning Park in Singapore, I came across a sculpture that made me pause and reflect.
A sculpture may stand still, but the message it carries can travel far.
For me, this Unity Sculpture beautifully represents how people, cultures, ideas and communities can come together to create something stronger and more meaningful.
It also made me look at sustainability
from a slightly different perspective.
When we think about sustainability, we often think of renewable energy, reducing plastic, conserving water, planting trees or managing waste.
But sustainability is also about protecting what we already have; our heritage, our public spaces, our communities, our resources and our environment.
Fort Canning Park is a beautiful example of how history, culture, art and green spaces can coexist. Preserving such places while allowing people to experience, appreciate and connect with them creates value not only for today, but also for generations to come.
This is one of the reasons I enjoy being a Local Guide.
Whenever I visit a new place, I try to observe these aspects and, wherever possible, contribute through Google Maps; whether by sharing photographs and videos, updating relevant attributes, answering questions, writing reviews or highlighting responsible practices that can create awareness within the community.
Because sustainability does not always begin with something extraordinary.
Sometimes, it begins with simply observing what is around us and recognising its value.
Sustainability goes beyond academia and what is written on paper. It begins with observation, grows through awareness, and creates real impact when we highlight, share and inspire others to act.
What makes me particularly happy is seeing more and more Local Guides contributing in their own ways; through observations, photographs, reviews, posts, suggestions and conversations.
For me, that is the real achievement.
Because sustainability isn’t about one person doing everything.
It is about many people doing something.
When an observation becomes a conversation, a conversation creates awareness,
and awareness inspires action; even a small contribution can become part of a much bigger change.
My simple philosophy:
Observe. Document. Share. Inspire. Act. ![]()
And I continue to look for opportunities to discover and share practices around the simple principles of:
Reduce • Reuse • Recycle
Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder; I believe sustainability lies in the eyes of the observer.
Because sometimes, the first step towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future is simply to notice, care and share.
Sharing is Learning.
Let’s continue building an informed, connected, and stronger
community together.
Stay Happy, Stay Healthy!
JAI HO!!!
