Secret Spot and the battlefield

In my previous post I told that we will be visiting a secret location, which was the next stop in my Heritage Inspired Chola Tour. The previous parts are as follows:

Part 1 - Ruins of the 10th century Chola Palace

Part 2 - Sculpture Stories

Part 3 - History through Inscriptions

Part 4 - Proof on Rock

Part 5 continues:

We had to walk a few kilometers through the lushy green fields to reach the secret Spot. Though it was sunny, walking in the fields never made us feel tired.

Just before the sunset, that walk was really very refreshing and relaxing. Nature’s gift. I have mentioned about this place in my previous post regarding Earth Day

Those are the fields which was once the battlefield, which paved way for the upliftment of Chola dynasty and downfall of Pandya Dynasty. Aditya Karikalan helped the Chera Dynasty to defeat the Pandya Dynasty. The place where this battle was fought is known as Thirupurambiyam. This battle made the Chola dynasty to flourish. History is mystery

After a walk, through the lushy green fields, we reached a place with an enclosed compound wall, with a big banyan tree on one corner and a small Temple of the Local dieties on the other side. Below is the picture of the banyan tree.

There is a Trishool, which means a weapon behind the tree. It was standing without any other idol.

When we entered the place I saw a person behind the tree. Since no one paid much attention, we proceeded to the small Temple on the other end. Below are the pictures of the Temple

Behind the Temple there were some rocks found with some inscriptions below a tree mentioning the Chola names. Though the inscriptions couldn’t be properly seen, we could understand that this is related to the Chola period.

As mentioned in my previous post, the secret meeting by the Nobels, to kill the prince Aditya Karikalan was held under the big banyan tree.

There were benches below the tree and we felt like having a rest. I was curious to see what is behind the banyan tree. When I went behind the tree I found a few people hiding. I was afraid, came back and joined the group.

Afterwards I found that they are the village people dressed up and waiting to enact a skit as a surprise to us. I spoiled their surprise.

They performed the street play (drama) very professionally. We enjoyed the place and the skit. Also they had prepared a village dish and distributed to us in biodegradable natural cups with wooden spoons.

After that we had dances by our group’s junior members. We enjoyed a lot. Since it was going to be sunset, we left the place.

My review in Google Maps about this place.

The next morning our plan is to visit an iconic place which has Life in Structures . and full of wonders. Let’s meet there in my next post.

Thanks and good bye.

Very unique… appreciate their valuable companionship…may be they do it to all the tourists who visit there…
Were there other tourists also…or you people were alone?
Rather, who informed the Skit people about your visit… very anxious to know…
Did you people give any tips to them?
Very interesting exploration… dear @Gurukrishnapriya
Thanks for these details…

Hello GKP, Thank you for sharing history of Thanjavur/dynasty of Chola kingdom. I had visited this place in 1988 or 89 but only main temple, you have given reference of more places. I was not aware of the tragedic story of The kingdom.

Thank you very much @TravellerG Sir. The street play was part of the itinerary of the tour I undertook. This place is not much visited by other tourists. Since this tour is for those who visit to see the inscriptions and very much conducted by the historians and scholars. The street play was arranged by the tour operators.

We didn’t give any tips to them.

Thank you very much @Jitendra_pandya ji. I am telling only the tip of the iceberg. So much historical evidences are there. I could remember a very little part. In the coming posts I will be writing about the Thanjavur Big Temple. There are so many wonders in that Temple.
