Sea of Azov and Yeisk area #TeamRussia

This post is a part of #TeamChallenge from #TeamRussia.

Today I wanna tell everybody about one of interesting parts in the South of Russia - Sea of Azov. All last week I sharing about the opposite part of my country - Russian North (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4), and I think, now it’s time to get more sun and heat

Location and climate

Sea of Azov is located in the Eastern part of Europe and connects with Black Sea by Kerch Srait. In northeast, east and south Sea of Azov borders with Russia (Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar Krai and Crimea), and in western and northern part with Ukraine (Kherson Oblast, Zaporizhia Oblast and Donetsk Oblast). This sea is unique for it’s shallow depth: the deepest place is only 13,5 meters, and average depth is 7 meters. In many places you can wade for 200 meters from the coast!

Climate of this sea is also unique. Located at the same lattitude like Ottawa or Quebec in Canada, Sea of Azov has very warm to hot and dry summers and mild short winters with temperatures around freezing point. Northern part of the sea freezes during the cold waves in winter, and in southern part climate becomes subtropical. During the summer water near the cost can warm up to 30 degrees Celsius, and thanks for it’s shallow depth, sea is good to swim from the end of April, when the most part of Russia is still covered by snow. Even Black Sea is cool till the end of May. Climate conditions near Sea of Azov allow you to harvest two crops diring the year. There is a lot of watermelons grow in nearby fields, and one time I bought watermelon, that weight 20 kg.

The main cities in Russian part on the Sea of Azov are Taganrog, Yeisk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk and Kerch. Another famous place for tourists is Dolgaya Spit. (or Dolzhanka), situated near Dolzhanskaya stanitsa, which is one of the popular camping place in Russia. Taganrog is well-known as a birthplace of Anton Chekhov - famour russian writer and playwright. In Yeisk spent his last years and died Ivan Poddubny - one of the most famous professional wrestlers in the world, who finished his professional career in 70 years old!

Leisure and activities in Yeisk county

Sea of Azov coast has a lot of sandy and shell beaches, that are perfect for families with children: shallow depth allows children learn to swim. Yeisk town can really be called as a “pearl of Azov”, and I’ll tell you more details about it.

In Yeisk you can find wonderful aquapark in the west side of the town, near Kamenka beach. It can be interesting not only for children: when I was 22, I enjoyed big water slides and felt like a child. Also there are dolphinarium and aquarium not far away from aquapark.

The center of public activities in Yeisk is Park named after Ivan Poddubny, or Poddubny Park. Here you can ride carousels, ferris wheel, take nice photos and enjoy the meals of Russian, Caucasus and European cuisine.

If you’ll go for awalk from Poddubny park through Karl Marx street, soon you will reach Maxim Gorky park, in which large trees grow - good place when it’s hot. After this park you can go for a walk on Sverdlova street, pedestrian alley in town centre. There are a lot of beautiful and big fountains near this street and on it. Here you can enjoy very tasty Russian okroshka in Paradise restaurant and buy tasty home vines of Kuban region.

In Yeisk town centre preserved a lot of small and nice houses with authentic gates and shutters on the windows, that sometimes remind Italian windows. In some streets you can find paving roads.

For youth Yeisk is also good for it’s clubs, karaoke-restaurants and surf bases, located on Yeisk spit. Weather conditions in this area are good for surfers, and surfing is one of the most popular activities in Yeisk.

Azov region is well-known as a land of Don Cossacks, one of the biggest russian cadet corps is situated in Yeisk. If you want better get acquainted with the culture of the Cossacks, you can take a bus trip with excursion to Dolzhanskaya stanitsa and visit museum of this settlement, ride a horse and listen Cossacks songs.

As for me, Yeisk is one of the moust soulful towns in Russia, I want to go back there everytime. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to get to Yeisk out of summer season: trains run to the town from Moscow and Saint Petersburg only from June to September. Yeisk has an aiprort, but it is out of service for citizens and using only like a military base. Nearest airport is situated in Rostov-on-Don city, and this is one of the best airports in Russia, but it’s quite far away (200 km) from Yeisk. However, Yeisk is so popular place for beach vacation, that it’s really difficult to book a hotel since March.

@Ant_Bad_Yogi , the best way to visit Yeisk is by car out of summer season (in summer highways to the south are busy). I also forget about Krasnodar airport, that’s located in 3 hours from Yeisk. I used only my car or bus from Rostov-on-Don to reach Yeisk. Train is good way during the summer, as I listened from other people.
