Google Maps satellite view.
My friend sees the familiar patchwork of rooftops, streets winding through neighborhoods, and green spaces of parks. And he can zoom in to see his house and maybe even his motorcycle in the driveway. This is a helpful way for him to understand the layout of the city and find directions.
And I, being a Local Guide, see the same overhead imagery. However, there are subtle hints and cues on his view. He might see a suggestion to label an unmarked park or confirm the existence of a newly built lawn tennis court he knows about. He also notices areas where business listings on the satellite image seem to be missing or incorrectly placed. For me, the satellite view is not just a picture; it is an opportunity to ground-truth the map, adding my local knowledge to make it more accurate and useful for everyone. And that makes me feel connected to the map.

Anyone visiting Baz Bahadur’s Palace can get a top-down view of the palace complex on a satellite map, clearly seeing the layout of the main buildings, courtyards and surrounding walls.
But the local guide’s eye is an immersive, ground-level experience, highlighting architectural details, a sense of place, and the visitor’s perspective. & many more things.
