Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia and the capital Kuching is 2 hours flight away from Kuala Lumpur. Our on-going adventure in Sarawak includes searching and trying the many myriads of flavors and design of the famous Sarawak layer cake. Called locally as Kek Lapis Sarawak.
[Photo below] - As the name suggests, the Sarawak layer cake is really cake that take a lot of time to make since each thin layer needs to be baked and re-baked one on top of each other until the entire cake is complete. And each layer may have multiple flavors and may even include condiments embedded in each layer. So bakers are so skilled as to create mosaics of colors when the cake is cut into.
[Photo below] - The below is the more basic layer cake, which is just a single flavor and color, but baked one layer on top of each other until the entire cake is complete. This is a lot of work, so the price of the cake is considerably higher than a single block of solid cake. When eating layer cake, we usually cut into small bit sized pieces and eaten a whole or eat it layer by layer, it’s all good!
[Photo below] - The below is a more complicated one with multiple flavors and layers baked one after the other. In the case below, it could be strawberry red, pandan green, lemon yellow, blueberry blue, and yam purple flavors.
[Photo below] - The below is another unique version where thin strips of dark chocolate is fitted between some layers.
[Photo below] - Here below is also another version with full chocolate layers.
[Photo below] - One of the more popular places to buy Sarawak layer cake is at Kek Lapis Dayang Salhah in Kuching (https://goo.gl/maps/8u24pwTFfeFpCH2w9 ). Prices are more economical than in the city, and one can try different flavors before buying. They even do nice packing for travelers.

The Sarawak layer cake is one of the favorite local snacks here. As a visitor, we should try these and personally for me, it’s delicious. And buy some for friends and family back home, and support their local business. When you come visit Sarawak next, make sure to visit one of the many shops here.
