On Sunday morning I wanted to feel tourist in my own city and decided to have lunch in one of the most famous and important Markets in Mexico City, the so-called Mercado de San Juan.
This establishment is located in the very center of my town, although the surroundings are not the best because there is a lot of garbage in the streets, homeless and insecure because of the risk of being assaulted, reasons why my family had never taken me and I also never had the initiative to go, but in truth it is a place that despite everything, it is worth going to know.
This time my parents saw a report on television about a place where they made coffee in a very traditional and homemade way, called Triana Coffe, which was the first place we visited and I liked it a lot because right there is the coffee mill and In addition, the attention was excellent by the man who was there. I decided to have a chocolate drink, my mom decided to take an Italian cappuccino, my dad had an espresso, it is worth mentioning that I tried all of them and I liked them all very much.
We continued the tour looking for something to eat, we were already very hungry, as we walked through each aisle I could see that there were various dishes such as seafood, exotic and unimaginable meats that at least in my country are not frequent to find in a conventional way, as wild boar, deer, buffalo, duck, goose, ostrich, quail, crocodile or rabbit, as well as many vegetables and unknown products, it is worth mentioning that many chefs come to prepare their dishes due to its great variety.
We decided to eat something more traditional like Spanish tapas, I chose one that contained German Cambodian cheese and prosciutto, although I also tried one that my dad ordered that contained Manchego and Serrano cheese, both had a very good taste. To accompany the food I wanted a glass of wine, but unfortunately, it did not taste good, since it was very diluted, perhaps it would have been a better choice to order Clericot as my parents did.
The dessert consisted of a cover but sweet: fig, mascarpone cheese and strawberry all in honey bee sauce; I was going to eat it but before that there was another element that stole my attention and that is that in the business next door they sold insects, so I decided to change my dessert for something more novel, so I approached said place and I saw that not only They sold scorpions alone but also in caramel trowel, bottles of mezcal (a traditional Mexican alcoholic beverage), maguey worms and “chicatanas” (large ants).
That’s how for about 2 dollars I ate a scorpion prepared with lemon and spicy, accompanied by a shot of mezcal that came from the bottle with the rattlesnake inside, I must confess that more the experience than anything else, since the truth It had a rich flavor and it was something crispy.
The prices of this market are above average and they are not so accessible to the entire population, but it is worthwhile either as an inhabitant of Mexico City or as a tourist to come to know this place and dare to eat something different. I will return soon to eat hamburgers of some unique flavor.
Un saludo, soy Ameyali.
