San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade 2022 #LocalGuidesLove

Collage of Photos shot by LG @jayasimha78 during the parade

Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco was back in full swing this year after a break last year due to pandemic. Last one I attended was in 2020, that just before pandemic started.

Parade was held on February 19th 2022. Parade route in approximately 1.3 Miles long. Parade is free to public, you can stand on either side of the road on the side walk to watch the parade. There are also several paid seating stands on the parade route.

Parade starts around 5.30PM in the evening, this is one of the largest Night Parades in the USA and also one of the largest Chinese New Year Parade outside Asia.

Here is the Map of Parade RouteParade starts at Market and 2nd Street.

Collage of Several dragons which were part of the parade.

Parade consists varieties of dragons, Lion Dancers, Marching Bands, Chinese Acrobats, Stilt Walkers, Several Floats. Also San Francisco Mayor and City Council members participate in this parade.

There were over 100,000 people attended this years parade.

Parade starts with a fireworks, you can see that in the above picture. Also floats lined up at the start line of the parade.

One of the big sponsors of the Parade is Alaska Airlines.

Being Year of Tiger, there were several Floats of Tigers in the parade. Here is the Alaska Airline Tiger Float. In fact tiger head can rotate left and right!

Here is another float with Tiger which belonged to Comcast!

I believe this is one of the best floats of the parade.

The best place to shoot the parade is where folks have lined up for the parade and getting ready and practicing. Here is a group of Lion dancers who participated in the parade.

Everything in the parade pretty much starts with a fireworks, here is a group of lion dancers before the parade waiting for fireworks to go off!

It is really fun to watch Dragon Dancers, there were so many verities of dragon in the parade.

Chinese New Year is almost a two weeks celebration in San Francisco, which includes many cultural activities including Miss Chinatown USA Pageant.

Here is a shot of San Francisco Mayor London Breed who participated in the parade.

Here is a shot of one of the Marching bands. There were several bands participated during this parade.

This was one of the new groups, which I have not seen before. There was a whole Starwars group, including Darth vader. Checkout more photos in the album I have shared below.

Another attraction a huge shopping cart of ‘Lucky’ grocery store chain!

Parade ends with this huge lighted dragon carried by over 100 people, of course there is fireworks through out the parade next to this dragon dancers.

Here is the close up of the Dragon!

This years added bonus was a 15 mins fireworks at Union Square after the final Dragon dancers.

Wow… This parade is a treat to the eyes @jayasimha78

Previously I thought only Indians can dress so colorful, but the Chinese too seem to enjoy vivid costumes.

A night parade  - how exciting! Your photos are incredible, @jayasimha78 , I feel like I was in attendance! Lots of interesting participants - I’m jealous that there are Lucky markets there, we lost all of ours in Florida :sob: . Great to also see the representation as well. Is it always held in February?

@SP31 Thank You! Yep it is held in February. They have 2 weeks of festivities after Chinese New Year and ends with the Parade.

We also lost quite a few of Lucky stores, which turned in to Albertsons, there are very few left.

@jayasimha78 Interesting, I haven’t been to the Bay Area for Winter and the possibility of viewing this in person would definitely bring me back at that point of the year versus my usual summers there. And ah, that’s so sad to hear - here in Florida, they had to sell their physical store locations. Here’s to a few at least remaining moving forward.

@jayasimha78 You’ve taken some really beautiful photos that display the vibe of the event so well! I think its so grand that they have such an elaborate parade. I don’t think it is celebrated to such a scale even in Melbourne. I love the floats as well.

@jayasimha78 It’s perfect! In Brazil, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we did not have a performance in the Liberdade neighborhood (a neighborhood populated by Japanese immigrants)
