San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade 2020

San Francisco has many parades through out the year. Chinese New Year Parade is one of the best in the city. Parade starts around 5.30PM and makes it one of the few illuminated parades. The parade starts at the intersection of Market and 3rd street. Parade contingents starts lining up around 3-3.30PM in the afternoon. Staging area of the parade makes one of the best area to photograph the floats and participants of the parade.

As per CNY Parade website:

“Named one of the top ten Parades in the world by International Festivals & Events Association, the Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco is one of the few remaining night illuminated Parades in North America and the biggest parade celebrating the lunar new year outside of Asia. Started in the 1860’s by the Chinese in San Francisco as a means to educate the community about their culture, the Parade and Festival have grown to be the largest celebration of Asian culture outside of Asia. Since 1958, the parade has been under the direction of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce.”

This years parade had lot more dragons compared to last years. Parade ends with a huge lighted dragon dancing. Through out the parade route fire crackers were lighted right in front of this dragon dancers. Dragon dancing is really fun to watch.

Mayor of San Francisco also participates in the parade along with several city council members. Here is Mayor London Breeds Cool ride.

Parade creates great opportunity to photograph, specially colorful floats, marching bands, lion dance groups, kids with face painting etc. Here is my selfie :slightly_smiling_face:

I have been seeing this from last few years, now they have grown up.

Cute kids who were part of the parade.

San Franciso is city of cable cars, several cable cars also participate in the CNY parade. Here is SFPD participating in CNY

There are several companies also participate in the parade. South West is sponsor of the parade.

Parade starts with lighting of long and loud firecrackers.

Here is one of the Marching band groups lined up at the staging area of the parade.

Here is a cute lion dancer. Several lion dancing groups participate in the parade, they are really fun to watch.

Why did I take the picture of a shopping Cart? Well look at the size of this cart. Man sitting on it is driving the shopping Cart.

One more Cable car in the parade.

If you are in the San Fraciso in February this is a must watch event.

Awesome @jayasimha78 ! Gung Hay Fat Choy!!

Your photos definitely captured the experience of being at the annual San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade.

I have fond memories of standing as a kid for hours, watching all the floats, high school marching bands, the St Mary’s Girls Drill team, of course, the lion dancers with the fire crackers, the antique cars filled with dignitaries, Miss Chinatown USA and her Court, and waiting for the dragon to finally appear at the grand finale.

Also, the brick firecrackers going off were not in cages (darn, safety precaution measures! ). They would light them and also throw them lit out in front of them on the street as they walked.

The annual joke in my family was how much rain will fall, how cold will it be, or both during the parade time. But with climate change, this has not been the case for at least 10 years!

These days I watch it the parade on television, but that will change again shortly.

How were the crowds this year? With the parade route being mostly on Market Street, there is a lot more room for people to stand. How early did you get there?

Cheers,

Karen

Tagging @TsekoV so he can get a glimpse of what the largest Chinese New Year Parade is outside of China.

This parade is nothing like what you would find in China/Asia because of its size and how much local SF & Bay Area communities participation. Also, it attracts outside of the SF Bay Area parade participants (high school marching bands in California as a whole) and there are a lot more corporate floats (Twitter from Jay’s photo for example) than when I was growing up. To me, this Parade represents more of the Chinese American experience than what you are used to during your time in China.

Cheers,

Karen

You are absolutely right about the weather, it was moderate and didn’t have freeze in SF this year. My family also came to watch the parade, that made it even more enjoyable, other than photographing the parade. Parade route starts on Market, they go around Union Square and eventually on Kearny street past Sacramento street. Still quite a bit of crowd watching the parade this year.

Wow @jayasimha78 . That looked like it was an amazing parade. Love the photos of the dragons, the decorated tram and the huge motorised shopping trolley. What? That thing was amazing. Did you have a favourite photo or part?

We also have a Chinese New Year celebration in Cairns, but it is much smaller. Still, similar with dragons, dancing and lots of loud fire crackers. Thanks for sharing.

Fabulous pics and a nice description of the experience, @jayasimha78 ! I was away so I wasn’t able to attend, which I’m bummed about. Hopefully next year, God willing.

Thanks for sharing!

I didn’t know so far that the parade for the Chinese New Year in San Francisco is the biggest in the world outside of China. I just wonder if one day I could go and experience it with my own eyes, hopefully one day I would!

Yes I’m absolutely interested in this!

What a grand celebration San Francisco has put on for the Chinese lunar new year celebration. and I am so glad that you were there to record this and to share it with us all.

I have heard somewhere that outside of China San Francisco has the largest China town.

@jayasimha78 I hope you do not mind that I add your post to my #CNYInMyCity challenge.
