Sail into Southampton

Since the mid-1800s, Southampton has held a renowned reputation as a prominent liner port. An unforgettable chapter in its history unfolded in 1912 when the world’s most renowned liner, The Titanic, set sail from this very port on its fateful maiden journey. Among its crew were around seven hundred residents of Southampton, tragically marking the beginning of a voyage that over five hundred of them would never complete.

Southampton still has a lot of previous cultural heritage of their previous buildings in which you can, for example, go in on the weekends. It might be inappropriate to head into houses of people who have had their houses past down for a new generation. So there are building like theTTudor House and Garden , Medieval Merchant’s House and other ruins like the Holyrood Church and Bargate.

Standing proudly at the heart of the High Street, The Bargate was meticulously constructed around 1180 AD to serve as the primary entryway to the medieval walled town. Revered as “likely the most exquisite and undoubtedly the most intricate town gateway in Britain,” it stands as a testament to architectural brilliance. Over its rich history, The Bargate has fulfilled diverse roles. Originally housing the city’s inaugural Guildhall, it played host to merchants for countless years, shaping the town’s commercial tapestry. During the harrowing days of World War II, the structure transformed into an air-raid shelter, offering solace and survival to the city’s residents amidst the bombings.

LGBT+ venues!

The London Hotel was built in 1907 on the site of an older pub. Throughout the week they do fun events on their stage such as drag bingo, drag quizzes and on the weekends, they have cabaret, drag show and DJs. They also sell food here. My experience was a very gleeful one where I got to play Drag Bingo where I even got to win a free drink as I won the bonus game! There are a lot of mini-games as well that kept each round entertaining. Friendly staff, and a disabled toilet on the ground floor.

After leaving the drag bingo I made my way over to The Edge & The Box Bar which is a bar and the other is a nightclub. You will have to get through the dance floor which is playing some pop, RAP and R&B tunes to get to the Box Bar where you’ll be met with the fun tones of cabaret and show tunes. If you want to listen to your mates sing, there is also a karaoke bar here. The venue has been in operation since 1995. There are activities here such as a pool table and an outdoor garden.

The Mayflower Theatre was unveiled on the 22nd of December, 1928, the theatre’s journey took a significant turn in the summer of 2018 and now has a more modern aesthetic. The theater showcases West End theatre productions across the United Kingdom that are on tour. Shows here lasted for about 2 months or so then it swapped out with another. Furthermore, the theater serves as a platform for one-of-a-kind comedy performances and musical events, adding to its dynamic entertainment repertoire.

There are so many activities to do in this town such as tenpin bowling, axe throwing, batting cage, Golf Course, summertime alpine hill, and outdoor working out space.

The outdoor working-out space is basically only pull-up bars so not much actually. But right next to it is a very large, sandy and adventurous children’s playpark with an ice cream stand. And can be located in Southampton Common, which is a very large park with lots of open space but not much going on. It is really good if you and your friends are looking to chill out or bring your own activities. It can be a better park experience than Central Park those five parks have less space but a lot more culture and artwork like their memorials, a water fountain with a show and art work.

The SeaCity museum is split into 3 sections (only for £10) where one focuses exclusively on the Titanic, a second room for trading and artefacts and a third room is on stories of citizens, and the town history and businesses including the topic Southaptons role in the slave trade, and sports. I think you are getting your money’s worth for sure. A highlight was in the Titanic section where they used audio clips and visuals to showcase the post-sinking of the Titanic court cases and rulings to view if there was negligence. Furthermore, delving into Southampton’s historical import activity provides a captivating perspective. The city’s vibrant past as a hub for imported goods becomes evident upon closer examination. This historical context sheds light on the intriguing diversity of culinary influences found within its culinary landscape. The origins of these diverse flavours span continents, from the South Coast of America to the far reaches of East Coast China.

Thanks for sharing about Southampton. Did you know there’s another Titanic museum in New York where some parts of the ship eventually arrived after being found in the 80s. Interesting and tragic story @HeyitsNicho
