“You won’t be happy at the destination if you can’t be happy on the journey.” – Unknown
Don’t You agree? My dear connect friends?
Being an avid traveller, I have always enjoyed visiting unexplored places. And what has made my travel memorable is the journey to those destinations. For instance, on my visit to Ladakh, I remember how exciting it was to travel through the water springs, cross the hanging bridges, and ride through roads in sand dunes which are so well maintained by the Border Road Organization (BRO). But did you know that the Administration of Union Territory of Ladakh ensures most Road safety and they also have constituted a separate entity as Ladakh Road safety Council? Well, of course, other Indian states also have their own safety policies in place. After all, safety is for everyone and safety has no option.
Be it a trip to some distant place or just a market visit, safety counts everywhere! If you have travelled to North India you can imagine how experienced the bus/cab drivers need to be to ensure the safety of passengers. But considering the unawareness of safety protocols or negligence at times or many other reasons, periodic safety awareness campaigns are mandatory.
With an aim to increase traffic rule awareness, road safety awareness month will be celebrated in India between the 18th Jan to 17th of February by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Parivahan Sewa) from year 2021. During this awareness month, various activities are welcomed like Nukkad Nataks, Safety quizzes, Blogs etc. You can visit the various activities run by the Indian Government here. While the majority of the population is aware of safety norms set by the ministry, these activities ensure the periodic visit of not just vehicle owners but pedestrians to safety guidelines as Pedestrians are an integral part of road safety. You can follow the Instagram page of the National Highways Authority of India, and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways for a quick tour of road safety guidelines.
Although we always focus on 100% compliance with safety, the zero-incidence events are just on pages. While most of the uninviting events are ephemeral, few leave solid footprints behind. As a regular bike rider, I believe that safety is everyone’s responsibility and it is incomplete without You. A lot of efforts are being put in by Mumbai and Navi Mumbai traffic police to help spread safety awareness. I am glad to share on the Connect platform that I actively participated in one such safety awareness campaign designed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and organized a safety awareness week at my workplace. We also extended Road safety to ‘workplace safety’, celebrated from 17th to 20th January.
As I mentioned earlier, I commute to my workplace by two-wheeler which keeps me going back to traffic rules regularly here are a few top safety steps which I follow dedicatedly,
Wearing a helmet with a chinstrap compulsorily
No usage of gadgets during the ride
Wearing safety gear all the time without any compromise
Always give an indicator while you change lanes (And of course, not changing lanes unnecessarily)
Do not overtake
Do not Overspeed
While writing this post I came across a safety pledge by MyGov which provided me with a certificate for taking a safety pledge. You can take yours too!
Do you travel to your workplace by road? What are your experiences with safety? Do you follow strict safety protocols during your commute? Have you participated in any safety awareness campaigns?

Happy riding, Happy travelling!
