Road Safety Awareness Month, India- 18th January- 17th February

“You won’t be happy at the destination if you can’t be happy on the journey.” – Unknown

Don’t You agree? My dear connect friends?

Being an avid traveller, I have always enjoyed visiting unexplored places. And what has made my travel memorable is the journey to those destinations. For instance, on my visit to Ladakh, I remember how exciting it was to travel through the water springs, cross the hanging bridges, and ride through roads in sand dunes which are so well maintained by the Border Road Organization (BRO). But did you know that the Administration of Union Territory of Ladakh ensures most Road safety and they also have constituted a separate entity as Ladakh Road safety Council? Well, of course, other Indian states also have their own safety policies in place. After all, safety is for everyone and safety has no option.

Be it a trip to some distant place or just a market visit, safety counts everywhere! If you have travelled to North India you can imagine how experienced the bus/cab drivers need to be to ensure the safety of passengers. But considering the unawareness of safety protocols or negligence at times or many other reasons, periodic safety awareness campaigns are mandatory.

With an aim to increase traffic rule awareness, road safety awareness month will be celebrated in India between the 18th Jan to 17th of February by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Parivahan Sewa) from year 2021. During this awareness month, various activities are welcomed like Nukkad Nataks, Safety quizzes, Blogs etc. You can visit the various activities run by the Indian Government here. While the majority of the population is aware of safety norms set by the ministry, these activities ensure the periodic visit of not just vehicle owners but pedestrians to safety guidelines as Pedestrians are an integral part of road safety. You can follow the Instagram page of the National Highways Authority of India, and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways for a quick tour of road safety guidelines.

Although we always focus on 100% compliance with safety, the zero-incidence events are just on pages. While most of the uninviting events are ephemeral, few leave solid footprints behind. As a regular bike rider, I believe that safety is everyone’s responsibility and it is incomplete without You. A lot of efforts are being put in by Mumbai and Navi Mumbai traffic police to help spread safety awareness. I am glad to share on the Connect platform that I actively participated in one such safety awareness campaign designed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and organized a safety awareness week at my workplace. We also extended Road safety to ‘workplace safety’, celebrated from 17th to 20th January.

As I mentioned earlier, I commute to my workplace by two-wheeler which keeps me going back to traffic rules regularly here are a few top safety steps which I follow dedicatedly,

Wearing a helmet with a chinstrap compulsorily

No usage of gadgets during the ride

Wearing safety gear all the time without any compromise

Always give an indicator while you change lanes (And of course, not changing lanes unnecessarily)

Do not overtake

Do not Overspeed

While writing this post I came across a safety pledge by MyGov which provided me with a certificate for taking a safety pledge. You can take yours too!

Do you travel to your workplace by road? What are your experiences with safety? Do you follow strict safety protocols during your commute? Have you participated in any safety awareness campaigns?

Do share your experiences/ comments in the comment section below.

Happy riding, Happy travelling!

Totally in agreement with you dear @Smita_Patil .

I also always wear a helmet when I ride my bike, and I always fasten a seatbelt while driving car. There are no exceptions.
Whether we are walking or driving, we must all exercise some form of discipline when on the road.

Excellent post to raise awareness with a self example. :+1:
BTW, those routes you mentioned are some of the longest and secluded route to travel, aren’t they? :grinning:

Cheers!

Excellent, dear friend @Smita_Patil post!

Very important topic - very well conceived and presented… appreciate your efforts and dedication.

I only faintly remembered about the Safety Awareness Month… Thanks for reminding.

Yes, used to go to my work place driven by my personal driver; fortunately in the past 27 years, we never had any major accidents, by the grace of Almighty.

Yes, you are right… safety for fellow drivers or pedestrians, fellow passengers, public - all are equally important - I do agree.

I’m tagging our friends @AnshukMitra , @abhishekpatk @ChiaraMariaC as in sure that they’ll enjoy this…

Best wishes

Hello @Smita_Patil ,

your Local Guides Connect-post is very informative and interesting! :star_struck: :+1:t2: :cherry_blossom:

Thank you very much for writing your very amazing post! :star_struck: :bouquet: :sparkles:

I travel to my workplace by public transportation (bus and train). :trolleybus: :bullettrain_side:

It’s so very important to stick to the traffic rules to keep the safety for everyone on the street. :grinning: :rescue_worker_helmet:

The bus drivers are having the same rules as car drivers, for example to stop at red lights and don’t drive too fast.

Also pedestrians have to stop at red lights. :vertical_traffic_light:

Yes, it’s also important to wear a helmet by riding a bicycle or a motorcycle. :biking_man: :rescue_worker_helmet:

Thank you very much for tagging me here, @TravellerG ! :star_struck: :bouquet: :star2: :rosette:

I wish you a great day!

Many warm greetings to you from Hamburg, Germany! :grinning: :de: :star2:

¡Ey @Maximilianozalazar !

Many thanks @Rohan10 for visiting this post and your keen interest in taking the pledge as designed by our Government.

I realize that the listening or reading is also a passive mode of awareness about safety which made me write this post. I am glad that you liked my post.

Thank you @AjitThite for your time to visit this post and comment. Your response is always encouraging.

May be I did not get the actual question in ‘BTW, those routes you mentioned are some of the longest and secluded route to travel, aren’t they?

If you re-frame your question, I can answer better with my perceived information and knowledge.

Dear @TravellerG I am so glad to know that you have earlier followed safety protocols and never had any incident to report.

The Road safety awareness month has been initiated from 2021 and many people are not really aware of it, (even I was not) until I organized a campaign myself. Well, I am glad that I could spread this to my friends here on connect.

Many thanks for visiting this post and your appreciation like always.

Also thanks for tagging our friends and spreading awareness.

@Smita_Patil thanks for the response. Would like to know if the route in Ladakh, such as the road to Col Chewang Rinchen Setu, is isolated and how one would have to go there given that it is supposedly quite close to the Chinese border?

Not necessary to reply though. :grinning:

Cheers!
