Imagine coming back from an amazing weekend escape and finding out that due to a broken pipe there was a massive road damage in the one and only street that can take you to your destination, so you seem to be stuck in paradise (and not in a good way). Now add to that stress the fact that a few minutes before, you gave your RSVP for a work meeting on that same day. This happened to me a few years ago while driving back from a short holiday in the northeast of the Dominican Republic. In fact, I’m the one with the white top analysing “the depth” of the situation.
We were very lucky that some people from the near by villages got creative and, knowing that the governmental response can take hours and even days, they took out some wooden pieces, concrete blocks and old plywood planks. Between one thing and the other we managed to allow my car to pass.
The situation almost gave me a heart attack, specially when I had to face my fear of the “solution” breaking while my vehicle was trying to cross the improvised community made bridge.
On a funny note: the “workers” ended up asking to be tipped for their work, which I was more than happy to comply since they did find a solution!
