Ride to Avalahalli Forest and Hesaraghatta Lake – Perfect Weekend Escape

Avalahalli Forest is located towards the northern corner of Bangalore in already a green neighborhood of Yelahanka. The forest is home to several species of flora, fauna and birds and is Majorly covered by Eucalyptus trees and the other part is quite rocky and dry. The place offers you a beautiful hill-top view of the Hesaraghatta region.

Love the ambiance, light rays striking through eucalyptus trees is such a bliss

We could barely hear any noise except for the chirping of birds, discreet sound of snakes and rustling of trees. We saw a decent number of people hiking and cycling around the trails in the Avalahalli forest but it was not crowded enough to destroy our peace. Too tired after working out? Enjoy the beautiful view and soothing breeze on the rocks for a while.

Early mornings or sunsets would be ideal time to visit this place. We visited here early morning and really loved the chilled misty ambiance. You can also spot a number of peacocks around which is a perfect escape for nature lovers. Since this place is not well connected by public transport, I recommend one to reach here by a private vehicle or bicycle.

Surprise plan: Hesaraghatta Lake

After clicking pictures in the woods and spending peaceful time on the rocks, we decided to head back to the city. Just as I was setting up the route on Google maps, I realized that Hesaraghatta is just 6 Kms away. I personally l am huge fan of the countryside roads around Hesaraghatta!

This route led us the backside of the lake which goes through the beautiful campus of IIHR with blissful research farms and well paved roads. Hesaraghatta is a beautiful village on the outskirts of Bangalore with a number of tourist attractions such as the Lake, Grassland, Rocks, Nrityagram and the beautiful IIHR campus. This lake basically originates from the Nandi hills and was created in 1894 across the Arkavati river . The reservoir used to be a major source of water for Bengaluru earlier. The lake has recently almost completely dried up as a result of human harm. It is one of the biggest lakes you would witness and furthermore, the view it offers is just mesmerizing.

Guess what?

After crossing the beautiful bright blue bridge, we walked on the lake bank enjoying the splendid view of the lake. Don’t fail to spot a beautiful yellow tower in the lake which used to be the pump house. The walk down the lake bed gives you a relax feel. A break from the chaos of the city. If lucky, you could even spot some rare species of birds around. Magpie Robin, Paddy Field pipit, Pond Heron, Black Drongo, Brahminy Kite Juvenile, Kingfisher, Black Kites, Bushlarks are few birds which you could sight often at the lake.

How to Reach?

Apart from the infamous yet scenic route we took earlier, easiest access to this place is the Hesaraghatta Main Road. The curves and a mild blanket of mist this road offers in the early hours of the day makes it perfect for a weekend ride destination from Bengaluru. We took the latter route on our way back and finally had our breakfasts at 11 AM. What a better outing than the one which makes you forget your hunger. Right?

Hello @ShravanJain ,

Thank you for sharing your experience with the community. It was interesting for me to read about your weekend escape. I wish you added a photo of the peacocks as well since I like these birds a lot. They look so royal.

Is this your motorbike in the first photo? Were you able to ride it up in the forest? I always prefer to ride a bike in the mountain as I find it easier.

I admire your patience not eating breakfast up until 11 AM. I am an early bird and first thing I do in the morning is to make myself a nice breakfast and a cup of coffee. Otherwise, I cannot continue with my daily tasks.

Thank you for your kind words @MoniDi

The bike in the photo belongs to friend of mine.

And there were no proper trails inside the forest to ride bike,it was so difficult to ride that you have go through bushes and bike we are riding was naked sports which was not built for our weekend escape😅 but somehow we made it till the end.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get the peacocks in the frame, otherwise I have uploaded here for sure.

If you ever visit Bangalore just PM for an adventure bike tour ,I guess you like long bike tours also.

Thanks @ShravanJain

For the brief description, i really want to visit at this place.

Motorbikes are not allowed into the forest area, cycles and walkers are allowed. No pets allowed as well. The place is beautiful and scenic, the perimeter as informed to us is about 7kms. Cyclists are allowed to go into the forest as well as to climb up the hills and rocks, they have the same freedom as walkers or runners. Out was a good journey and was the first time I was able to go trail riding.

Covid-19 has locked down in the world. We have been locked down since March 24, 2020 in Bangladesh. For more than 04 months, all businesses including grocery / restaurant / school / college / office were closed. Nowadays people are slowly returning to normal life.

Great location my dear. WoW!! Very nicely written. I had a lot of fun reading the post. the photo is also very beautiful. In fact, if you have a love for work, you can take a good photo.
