RICOH THETA V

Is RICOH THETA V compatible with Google Street application or not? It’s not on the Google list. But on the Ricoh Web site it is said that it is compatible.???

@atulkrishna The Theta S is what I use and the picture size is the same on the V. One thing I found it when I post 360 photos for Street View I use Photoshop to increase the size since it is close to acceptable for qualification in the StreetView App stats page. I was getting Google Maps approved but not showing in stats page. That is the only problem with the theta I have found. The change on the V is mainly in video, so you should be fine. You may want to wait to find a contributor here that has one and uses it to make 1,000% sure. The reviews I have seen are good.

Hi, @atulkrishna

Street View app(both iOS and Android) is also compatible with THETA V. But THETA S app is more useful.

Sample is here.

Good luck!!

PS. Theta V is certified by Google Street View Workflow Ready.

I bought a Ricoh Theta V for $430 and easily connected to GSV app, BUT the gps is only accurate to 70-80 feet (I did extensive testing) so it’s not good enough to use in GSV when connected. I use a GPS workaround to be accurate and you cannot connect to GSV and use the workaround. So I’ve taken a couple of thousand pix at 6 mph on my bike with the quickest time interval of 4 seconds. Moved them to my pc, processed them with the Theta software to straighten them (Straightening works fantastically!), then used GPicSync on PC and GPSLogger on my phone to set the GPS based on the time synced from the phone to the camera. Then move all the pix to my phone, then in GSV add a Maps Listing, then post with GSV. I’ve had great success doing that, but not ultimate success. Occasionally, google rejects hundreds of pix, and I don’t know why, and yes that for another post.

I contacted Ricoh tech support and they said they’d look into the GPS accuracy problem. They did not get back to me after 3 weeks. I’ve checked my phone and it’s accurate to 10 feet outdoors. So the GPSLogger app on my phone is accurate to 10 feet and that’s almost close enough for government work as my brother-in-law says. I bought the Theta at Best Buy, but am past the 15 return policy, but thee credit card I used (on purpose) allows returns up to 90 days for any reason. So I’ve started the process to return the Theta V.

If you’re just taking one pix at a concert or wherever, the Theta is the best 360 camera out there, it connects to GSV and will work properly in a short time and no fuss and the GPS will be close enough (70-80 feet). But if you’re trying to street view all the parks in your city like I am, it is no better than the $200 MI Sphere which I’m using now. I really didn’t like the output of the gear 360 2017, which I was given, so I won’t use it. I’m a level 8 at 42k points going for level 9 at 50k points. I’m making it so everyone can see, thru street view, all the parks in Bolingbrook IL. I’ve even added one park not on google maps and then added the street view pix and it worked great.

I’ve been reading more posts and davidcox said that the Theta V is close to acceptable resolution and I’m thinking that might be why some of my pix are not counted by GSV, I’ll try to uprez some that were rejected and upload again.

Hi @atulkrishna I’m using both Theta S & Theta V. both supporting with Google Streetview app.

@mikejbb I also did a test on this GPS accuracy, while walking it’s ok but with bike, there is a shift. I’m normally walking with Theta V and uploading and happy with the GPS accuracy.

@mikejbb What are you planning on replacing it with? I would be curious. Also I am not moving on my shots. They are stationary and am picking up the phone GPS. The error could be magnified in the processing time and when it records the GPS location. Would be a variation in location start to finish of the picture. I find when saving to phone it takes at least 15 seconds per shot.

@atulkrishna There should be an updated certified list out for new cameras soon. It’s not out yet. Because the previous StreetView certification now has 4 updated certification tracks. Different old/new cameras may be certified under different tracks in the new system. If you are wanting to invest in a camera soon, it could be a good idea to wait and see the updated list before deciding. https://developers.google.com/streetview/ready/

If you need to invest in a camera now, then the Theta V is a good choice.

I replaced it with Xiaomi mijia 3.5K Panorama Action Camera - INTERNATIONAL EDITION BLACK bought at gearbest.com for $200, there was a special a few weeks ago, it’s $210 now. The pic rez is 6912x3456. The pictures look good, and the gps is recorded accurate to 30-35 ft. So I still have to use the GPSLogger workaround. It does not connect to GSV app. But it can take pictures 3.5 seconds apart, just a little faster than the Theta V at 4.5. I don’t save to phone as that would take too long for my bike rides.

You are correct, - there is a bug in the Theta S app, that doesnt bring through the correct number of decimal places in the exif data of the image, meaning that images will not be placed closer than about 20 metres. this issue applies to only images taken with the theta V, and includes both single and interval pictures taken with the theta s app.

images taken from within the streetview app with Theta v are accurately placed. i have raised this issue with Theta and will update when its fixed.

Hi Mike,

Interesting info about the Theta V; I’m reading it 4 months after your post- hopefully there has been some improvements on the GPS accuracy by now.

But on another note, that’s a cool interest you have with city parks. I happen to be doing the exact same project with parks (and trail heads) here in Charleston, SC. I’m not sure about your area, but I was surprised how many parks are not listed.

Are there any other tips or suggestions you have for shooting parks in 360, etc. on GSV?

-Thanks,

Charles

@SwirlyBird The tips I have right now is to check out cemeteries. A real lot of them are not even listed on maps. Do you own a Theta V now if so check out the SV section on new features?

Good Idea- You’re right I just found 4 or 5 cemeteries in the area that not listed…

But what Theta V functions on SV are you referring to?

You can shot video and then upload it to Streetview and have it publish 360 pictures and create a map of a location

Hi @atulkrishna the Theta V is compatible with the Street View App, but i’m using the Theta App for taking Photospheres and uploading them after via Google Street View App after i have patched Nadir.

@360hn Hi ynskln I would love to know at what point you patch the nadir? Are you patching single pictures or the video for mapping before you upload to Streetview? I have not been able to experiment with finding the point in the workflow to edit video shot for Streetview mapping

Hi @davidcox i am patching the nadir only on Pictures, i havent tried yet patching a video nadir.

@360hn The ThetaV is write protected and I just have not taken the time to see if I can color correct and edit the video after download to the camera and not mess up the GPS data. Every time I fool with video in premier pro I lose the GPS data and do not know how to reinsert it or to take the time to make small adjustments and reload.
