As a dedicated Google Local Guide and contributor from India, I would like to bring to your attention an important issue regarding the “Category” section for educational institutions on Google Maps in the Indian context.
When attempting to add or edit information related to schools, the available category options are insufficient and often inaccurate. For instance, when tagging a school affiliated with the CBSE, ICSE, or any State Board, the only available category is “General Education School”, which is not a valid or recognized classification in India. Our official school certificates and regulatory boards never use such a term.
Similarly, in the case of universities, there is no proper categorization to distinguish between:
Government Universities
Private Universities
Central Universities
Autonomous Universities
Open Universities
This lack of appropriate categories makes it difficult for Local Guides like me to accurately represent educational institutions on Google Maps. Moreover, it impacts the quality of information available to users across India who rely on Maps for authentic and precise educational details.
I kindly request that the Google Maps backend team in India consider updating the category options to reflect the real structure of the Indian education system. This would help enhance the accuracy and usefulness of Google Maps, particularly in the education sector.
