[Report] Reflecting on Connect Live 2019

The annual greatest festival for Local Guides, Connect Live was held in San Jose, California. This year, the number of attendees increased from 150 to 200 and grew into a bigger event.

Pre/Post-event

I arrived in US two days before Connect Live. Fortunately, I was able to enjoy those two days together with @OSAMA . They were absolutely amazing days!! We enjoyed sightseeing at Stanford University, silicon valley, and so forth, joined [Recap] 36walk San Jose (meetup #80 by me!) by @PaulPavlinovich and Pizza Meetup in San Jose by @manulele81. Those pre-meetups were really exciting events and completely suited for motivating us before the main event. And on the 15th morning, on the last day of Connect Live, I joined a morning coffee meet-up by @KarenVChin too. The place, Philz Coffee is familiar in San Francisco and gives me a surprise every time. I tried a pink coffee called “Rose”, it was also nice.

Connect Live 2019

We spent a great four days together with 200 attendees from all over the world. Not only enjoying parties, but we also experienced wonderful speeches, group discussions, fieldwork, and so forth. And we earned a lot of insight and knowledge from the event and Local Guides.

We made friends with a lot of Local Guides via various opportunities during the event. One of the properties of Connect Live is connections with people. We shared our knowledge, experience, skills, and passion with each other. This connection and relationship will change us.

The official album of Connect Live is here. And the recap video is here. You can easily make sense of the details of how the event was via them.

Gifts

Connect Live attendees were given a lot of gifts and souvenirs. The special backpack, t-shirt, and a water bottle are in common every year. In addition to them, we were given Pixel 3 xl, Local Guides socks, and a Pegman pin badge. They are absolutely amazing gifts from Google.

Souvenirs from Local Guides were also great. For instance, Snacks, badges, key holders, postcards, and instant noodles. All of them were unique and very interesting.

By the way, do you know a proposal, #findpegman. This is a very simple proposal as just post a photo with Pegman on SNS with the hashtag. Attendees, please read below and try to do it.

From Japan

This year, 6 people ( @Yucco , @Yasuyo , @Shota_2020 , @ken_jp , @jjwalsh ) joined Connect Live from Japan. We gathered in a hotel room and enjoyed conversation at night, celebrated one’s birthday, and worked together on a lot of things during the event. Thank you for everything! By all means, let’s enjoy Local Guides together from now on.

By the way, ken_jp was awarded a prize, ”Most videos (2019) among Connect Live attendees”. Congratulations!

Takisawamet 2

Takisawamet 2 that I introduced here before was brought to Connect Live 2019. And I collected attendees and Googlers’ signatures on the helmet. Thanks to all, I succeeded to complete the wonderful helmet. That is my treasure. I’ll take 360-degree photos and SVs using this.

Conclusion

Connect Live is not just a perk, it is one of the amazing motivating events for passionate Local Guides all over the world. Attendees, what did you discover at Connect Live? Please share it with your neighbors, and let’s increase friends in your region who are able to enjoy Local Guides together.

Thank you for the Local Guides Team and all attendees. I hope to see you again somewhere in the world soon.

[Japanese]

[Recap] 36walk San Jose (meetup #80 by me!)

Most videos (2019) among Connect Live attendees”を受賞しました。

Local Guides Team

Hi @HiroyukiTakisawa,

very nice recap, thank you for sharing your beautiful experience, pre-post and during CL19 … as you said “connecting people”, this was a great value along all the trip.

I’m really glad having met you and it has been huge pleasure sharing those moments with you, hope to see you soon.

Here a selfie while I left my signature on your beautiful helmet ?.

Great recap @HiroyukiTakisawa – you were so active during Connect Live. I kept seeing glimpses of you everywhere. You got so many CL2019 attendees talking and inspired by your Takisawamet 2 (homemade 360 camera helmet). You were literally the “life of the party” walking around with it on!

Glad you enjoyed your Philz Coffee

I hope you tried many coffee places while we were in San Jose during Connect Live. There were many local “mom and pop” small businesses to sample great coffee.

Cheers,

Karen

Hi @HiroyukiTakisawa!!

It was a real pleasure to meet you at connect Live. I am sorry @Jesi and I could not arrange our schedules to go with you and@OSAMA to Stanford. When you were at Fisherman’s Warf, we were near Union Square picking our car. Then, when we went to Fisherman’s Warf, you were near Union Square… haha!

See you some day!

Hello, @KarenVChin Thank you for your kind words.
That helmet became one of my best partners:-)

This time, I visited 5 small cafes in San Jose. (One of them is your recommended cafe nearby Marriott.) All of them were personalistic and attractive but among them, Crema Coffee Roasting Co. was the best for me.

Lately, I’m recommending Philz as a unique coffee shop to my friends in Japan;-)

Thank you, @HiroyukiTakisawa for the nice review. I can see some earth doll on the gift items. I think they’re the love from Bangladesh for CL’19s attendees.

This is an awesome recap @HiroyukiTakisawa and I love your thought that its not a perk its a motivating event. This is very true. Whenever I chat with someone near me who is a Local Guide and they say how did you get to go - I just tell them that I contribute in many ways to the community and I try my best to contribute well and consistently on Maps. When they return, so its about your level, I let them know that there were several Level 5 people at this year’s event and they think - well that’s not so hard, I can do that which gets them going for the months in the lead up to Connect Live selection.

@HiroyukiTakisawa thanks for sharing your thoughts. Amazing recap!

I definitely agree with you when you say motivation event. It’s really happened with me, but not about Maps, I felt motivated for life experiences, to be a better professional and, of course, study Japanese more seriously (笑).

In case you are in trouble to study Japanese, let us know anytime. Doing Hangout chat with us is also nice!

Add to your San Jose coffee list besides Philz, Voltaire Coffee House

Across a street from the San Jose Marriott, Voltaire specializes in these “animal” lattes.

Cheers,

Karen

Hi, @KarenVChin

We visited there but we forgot to order an animal latte art. As the taste was very nice, I hope to go there again:-)
