Hello and please give your thoughts on topic
uh, none?
I know here in madison, WI this venue called the Frequency has since banned hip hop shows from their place. Some squabble between the owner and the tenant renting the space. I have boycotted it ever since.
I miss kicking it to Milo and Open Mike Eagle while they were in town. Not to mention I love me some Lizzo!
It seems that there are no real “legal bans/regulations” on Hip-Hop/Rap concerts in Madison; but I know from personal experience of being a “regular” on & off at a few different bars around the Madison/Monona area that most bars even “ban” hip-hop/rap related music from their TouchTunes jukeboxes… Like to the point you can’t even play a Rihanna song, it’s rediculous!!
I am pretty sure the hip-hop/rap scene in Madison was “murdered” by the constant complaint/incidents/police protection needed at The Majestic Theatre on King St. downtown (it actually used to be primarily a hip-hop themed club/dance night(s) back in the day, it was named “Club Majestic”, the hip-hop club venue opened early 2003; and by 2004 it was mainly a hip-hop venue…) It really started going downhill in 2005 though, there were 3 incidents of gunfire and in 2006 (literally the next night after I had just gone clubbing there!!) someone was stabbed outside during a fight.
I remember that when I went there a few times in 2006, they had allowed underage (18-20yrs old) to dance at the club on designated nights… The road was always blocked with police barricades and/or police cars just to make it very known they were on patrol there, and wouldn’t allow vehicles directly in front of Club Majestic. Basically it all created a “he says she says” ordeal, with people putting blame on anything and everything they could… the “community” blamed the hip-hop “music”; long story shortened, those owners sold and when they did the CITY was allowed to put strict “conditions” along with the purchase of the venue… This basically forced “Club Majestuc” to give up and just surrendered its arts license, meaning no more DJs and underage patrons, shortly after that they sold the venue to the new (and still current owners…).
So does Madison technically have “regulations” regarding hip-hop and rap concerts? I’m sure the city would say “No! All are welcome!!”; but at the same time I’m pretty sure that each and every preforming act that’s at a venue around here has to get an “under the table” OK from someone because of the lack of patrolling police available for an event for one or two nights. And it all happened because a few idiots decided to shoot and stab each other at venues which identified as “Hip-Hop/Rap” clubs…
